268 ATTEMPT B CLASS
As spoken with damian and kevin on the last challenge we thought it would be interesting to have a full attempt with the old rules for private transport obviously it couldnt be classed as a record but the obvious savings in time would be huge. For example somebody driving you from Epping to Upminster or Morden to Wimbledon or vice versa Moor park to Watford also springs to mind and High Barnet to Cockfosters Walthamstow to Leytonstone most of the previous records were around the 15hour mark with one set at 14h 33mins?.
Obviously this would also suit the less fit people in mind as probably the only run which would be quicker than a car would be Northwick Park to Kenton or Aldgate to Aldgate East and then only the platform changes but the energy saved would be fantastic. As far as i know an attempt hasnt been made since 1993 so it 15 years this comic relief day so its about time a recent one was made.

Yes exactly that is the only reason I do Tube Challenge, my favourite was the first run of the day on CiN day last year at around 6.45am in temperature well below freezing...........ping pon wrote:personally i dont think i would enjoy it because i enjoy running to the stations

Re: 268 ATTEMPT B CLASS
Personally I can't see the point of attempting a class B record. I don't think Guinness would entertain having two different catergories like they did in the past. I think that people would be likely to break speed limits when driving between stations which is maybe why Guinness dropped the class B in the first place. At least with the current rules it means that the network is the same for everyone and it does not depnd on how many friends with fast cars that you have.
One day I shall return!

Re: 268 ATTEMPT B CLASS
I'm interested in doing it to see if we can get anywhere near the times that were set if I remember corrcetly 14h 33min for 273 stations. I know that guinness wont be interested but it would be fun to challenge a time set 40 years ago.

Yes just to back up what Damien was saying it was just really to see if we could anywhere near the times set way back in the mists of time...... It would also be interesting to see what time could be acheived on a 268 Class B against the provisional GWR set in Dec 07........

Surely you would Hammer the time set in December into the middle of next week with a B Class attempt?

Re: 268 ATTEMPT B CLASS
An interesting idea in principle, but logistically potentially difficult? For a start, who would volunteer to give up a day of their time to drive around London and Essex picking people up a couple of times through the day? Especially if they're giving up on the possibility of doing the more fun bits of a challenge.
Do any people have folding bikes? I've got one at home, and they're allowed to be taken on all tube trains at all times if folded. A potential idea for a similar challenge? Not GWR eligible (and difficult if nobody else has a folding bike!), but maybe something to think about?

Re: 268 ATTEMPT B CLASS
Its not so much about beating the current world record and the new one waiting to be comfirmed but to challenge the time set in 1967. folding bikes would be good for the normal runs but cars are still needed for the big gaps eg Epping to Upminster.

Would you need two cars? In some cases, presumably, the Tube would beat a car to the next out-of-network interchange.

Re: 268 ATTEMPT B CLASS
I daresay you would. There's no way a car could get from one end of the Northern line to the other before the train itself, for example arriving by car at the end of whichever northern branch, followed by a transfer to Wimbledon from Morden.
Unless the Northern line was working normally, that is.
Edit: Well, you'd need two cars if you actually wanted to do a whole line in one go in the middle of a route like this. There would be ways of avoiding such far-apart car requirements in route planning. I bet it would end up that the fastest route like this needs at least two cars or bikes or whatever because of this sort of thing though.
