How did you find tubechallenge.com?

Post by Going Underground »

Looking at post that went slightly off topic earlier today I thought it would be interesting to find out how people had found their way onto this forum and the surreal world of tubechallenge..... :D

My own story was whilst watching the now infamous episode of "the tube" I was fascinated by this crazy person attempting to visit all the stations on the network in world record time..
A web search took me to "*****" and then that linked to tubechallenge.com where I found the forum....That was in April of this year and I read as many posts as possible including the upcoming Z1 get together in May...
I thought about maybe coming to the offical Z1 and wasn't really sure what to expect. I persuaded my Brother and Son to come as well and we set off with a certain amount of tredpidation and exitement....
Needless to say we had a brilliant day and met some some really nice and interesting people....
I will never forget the shock of that first dash from Aldgate East to Aldgate. :o I had visions of a nice leisurely trip around the underground with a spot of lunch thrown in on the way...... :)

I can't believe that so much has happened in just over six months (It seems so much longer than that)...and next week I will be attempting my first full network and GWR attempt.......

The only thing I find a little bemusing is that we don't have more members in view of the number of times "The Tube" is repeated on TV...

Well that's my story, I look forward to hearing some others.... :D

These were the mile stones in my Tube Challenging leading up to attending this forum:

* Reading Keith Lowe's "Tunnel Vision"

* Finding and embrasing Geoff's site

* Making a Z1 attempt in one day from Sweden

* Getting in touch with Geoff who recommended this site to me.

Typed in "tube 7/7" on bbc search and found a thread on tube relief.

I seen Geoff on The Tube and was interested by what he was doing. After seeing the same episode about 10 times, I looked on the web and found his website. He recommended this site to me and now here I am! :)

No you didn't.

I created it for you Neil. It was MY idea for a forum to be added to the website.

Have a nice day </smug>

Yes, you had the idea. But I'd already had it when I first came up with the idea of this entire website.

Here's the email conversation we had:

You (on the 14th of January, 2005):

Neil,

How about a forum - could get interesting with little kids taking part.
You could even keep a hidden forum for those interesting
discussions!!!!!

My reply:

I had considered that, yes.

Therefore, it wasn't just your idea. Even Geoff and SK suggested it to me separately at around the same time so I don't even think one person can claim to be the only person to think of it.

I should point out to those people who aren't aware, that Chris hosts the SQL part of the site, as I had no SQL access back in January 2005, hence the "I created it" claim.

Although at the same time he created the SQL tables, I was creating the forum layout and initial content.

It's rather amusing to see you claim full credit for this forum :)

I vaguely remember seeing the late Caron Keating doing a challenge on Blue Peter many years ago, so that got me interested. Googled on "all tube stations" or something like that and found the site.

Had googled "Tube Challenge" about a year back when my interest was a lot fainter. This summer I was discussing my idea of doing it with a friend so prompted to re-google it. Ended up here, rest is history, now I just need to dig out a route and hopefully in the spring make a non-gwr attempt.

I found it thanks to Going Underground.
Take a look at this site he told me, "why don't we enter a team in the Z1C" he said. Since then Going Underground has gone challenge crazy.
(whispers to Neil "I think you should ban him") :D

In my defence and something that may shock Mr Tubeguru, I did something quite surreal last night.....

I used the tube to get from "A" to "B" without attempting a challenge before, during or after
K9 and myself went from Hatton Cross to Fulham Broadway via Earls Court to see Chelsea and back home via the same route!

I wonder if anyone else on the forum has ever used the tube for a "Non Challenge" purpose
