How about this TfL cycle scheme

Post by Going Underground »

As this is part of TfL there is no reason why this mode of transport could not be used for GWR purposes on full network

Except that Guinness ban the use of bikes as a means of transport.

Can this scheme only be used in certain areas?

The inital coverage more or less corresponds to zone 1 so they wouldn't be much use on a full network anyway.

And you'd have to prove you used them in Zone 1 and not anywhere else, and not a different bike.

I don't think this idea's going to fly.

So to bump this thread a bit...

So now its working and it has been pointed out to me that TfL are pushing the scheme as part of their integarted public transport network. It is a point to point service although it doesn't have a timetable.

What do people think? Should it be included? Have GWR made a ruling? Discuss....

I'd think that using a BorisBarclaysBike would actually be more trouble than it'd be worth, even if it was to be allowed. Presumably you'd have to run from a station to the nearest bicycle hire point, fumble around trying to get the thing to release the bike, then cycle like mad to the hire point that's nearest to your destination, hope that there's a free docking-station there (otherwise try and find one somewhere else), dock the bike back in (remembering to do it properly, otherwise you'll get charged money for a long hire period!), then run to your next station. I'm sure that the pre-positioning of BorisBarclaysBikes at key outlying stations that are well out of the normal bike availability zone would certainly not be permitted under GWR rules! :)

That was my point really, I can't see it being of any use at all on a GWR. Is was just a what IF question :)

However, maybe the use of BorisBikes could be fed into some sort of tube challenge .... a Z1 R15 race by TfL bike, perhaps .... ? :P
