Where do people stay the night before?

Post by spoogie37 »

When people start attempts at Amersham, where do they stay the night before please? Are there some particularly accommodating guest houses in the region where they don't mind people getting up at 5 o'clock or before? (This might also be useful fgor trying out the start bit)

I do also have in mind (for recce purposes) taking the Amersham-Chalfont-Chesham-Chalfont-Moor Park as read, staying at St Pancras Youth Hostel the night before (only £24, cheaper than any B&B) and taking a tube from Kings Cross at 05:06, this will (with changes) get me to Rickmansworth in time to meet the train down from Chalfont - good for trying out the change at Moor Park

Nita Hurley's B&B is the Tube Challengers' guesthouse of choice, as I understand it. I have never stayed there myself, though.

Nita Hurley is very accomodating. And she is used to us Tube Challengers, so there is no need for embarassed explanations. If you do stop there ask if she still has Geoff's jeans. If he can still fit in them he might want them back.

If Nita's is full you could try the Hemel Hempstead West Travel Inn

If you can get a lift to Amersham/Chesham it is great, but check taxi fares before you book!

Geoff!

Leaving your trousers behind at Nita's! I always thought she was the B&B of choice because she understood tube challenging, but it seems I was wrong....

Is she single??
A quick google images search reveals her to be married. I know this'll disappoint you greatly, Adham :D

I live in Chesham (yes, really...), so accomodation is no problem for me. I even let other challengers stay at my little studio if they're nice to me.

Has anyone thought of starting at Upminster and finishing at Amersham?
Or is it quicker the right way round?

1: Yes
2: Depends on your route.

Actually train frequency is not terribly important at this stage if you want to beat a specific record (rather than being as fast as possible). E.g. if you plan to arrive at Amersham 0:52, then you should try to find a start point/train at 06:17 or 06:18 and bet everything on one card!

However, in the morning it takes from 05:28 to 06:50 to reach North Harrow (covering Chesham/Watford) - i.e. 1h22m.

In the night however, the reverse route takes from 23:26 to 00:52 - i.e. 1h26m for the same coverage...

So bottom line is, I agree that starting at Amersham make more sense!

Yes, I'd rather not bet everything on making that one train that would give me the record.

I'd rather finish somewhere that has a "regular" service and where I can catch any of three or four trains and still get it.

Finishing at Amersham is just too risky.
