World Cup Sweepstake?

There I was sitting in Richmond today, partaking of my luncheon, when I suddenly had an idea.

I was wondering if it would be possible to organise a World Cup sweepstake. All we need is 32 people (including me) to each put one or two quid into the pot, run a quick computer program to allocate the 32 teams randomly and then wait to see who wins the World Cup.

I was thinking of not giving all of the entry money to the winner though; there would be smaller prizes for second and third places.

What do people think?

OK, I'll make a list of people who say yes (ask your friends too) and if we get anywhere near 32 before the first week of June is up, I'll run with it.

What do people think to a Ã‚Â£2 entry fee, making a pot of Ã‚Â£64? If you're OK with Ã‚Â£3 then we get a Ã‚Â£96 pot - not too bad is it?

I was thinking of spltting the pot 75% to the winner with 15% to second place and 10% to third. Giving all the money to the winner attracts less interest with sweepstakes I feel. After all, there are plenty of teams in it who can finish second or third.

By third, I mean the winner of the third-placed play-off match.

Sure, why not. Ã‚Â£3 is a bit steep though - I could only stump up Ã‚Â£1.70 for a "Silver Edition" Bakerloo EP!

I'm happy to program this if you want... I haven't programmed in ages and have been wanting something simple to do to get me back into it. Might slightly favour the author though

Yeah count me in guys, happy with Ã‚Â£2 or Ã‚Â£3, most sweepstakes I have run the winner gets around 55% 2nd 30% and 3rd 15% Winner still gets over half the pool and more interest for the minor places

The next problem is actually getting the money. I have a Paypal account. Most people have Paypal accounts these days don't they?

Cash in the post is the only other practical alternative, provided it's well concealed
