Yeah but once we get to know the people with those names, we start to think less of them looking like spam names etc.

OK, it's getting silly now.

It's quite hard to keep on top of all the spammers when you're out at work all day and too knackered to fix it in the evenings.

I might ask Chris to go through the SQL database and just delete the last people who signed up, back to the last-known "good" person. If you see what I mean.

I can't see any genuine ones in the latest signups.

Is it easy to change the Captcha? On my phpbb forum I've got a simple mathematical equation (eg 2+2=) that seems to have weeded them out, we've only had one in about 3 months.

Blimey Neil, that's well over 50 since the begining of October, like you say that is difficult to keep control of........ :?
I wonder why there have been so many in a relatively short space of time :?:

Because once you get one, you get loads - they're usually automated programs that send back a positive response saying "we managed to register so send more robots to sign up".

James - email me about the Captcha.

Some forums do not allow you to initially enter your web address until you've reached a certain number of posts. Is this another way you could stop the bots trying to establish accounts? It must be a pain having to deal with so much rubbish clogging up the forum.

Maybe you could scrap automatic registration altogether? So they email you for an account, and you assign them a Username of their choice and a random password that they can change. Having to email would surely stop bots from attempting to sign up?

Hang on, hang on.

The forum software does not (so far as I know) allow me to do the things you've mentioned above. It would require more time and skill than I have to make it so it does.

I can't stop anyone signing up - all I can do is set it to automatically reg them or for me to confirm it.

And you'll notice that I still haven't deleted them. :)

Can't do it tomorrow - I'm off to Exeter in the front of an HST ...
