From 2 January Barkingside, Fairlop, Hainault, Grange Hill, Chigwell and Roding Valley are being moved from zone five to zone four.

This is to increase passenger demand on this section of the Central Line

At last. I've been wondering when they were going to get around to doing that. It's been weighing on my mind for quite some time now.

In response, the people who live near those stations should move further out into zone 5.

That'll learn 'em.

Oh well that is going to make next years Z1 - Z4 challenge a bit more demanding then

"To increase passenger demand"? What kind of buzzwordy nonsense is that? "Why yes, now that Chigwell is in Zone 4 I absolutely demand to go there!"

Either passengers are demanding something, or they aren't. In this case they clearly aren't. OK, if they'd said "To increase passenger demand, we are providing residents with free placards saying 'We demand that Chigwell be moved into zone 4'" then they might have had a point. But if not, then speak English Mr LU Spokesperson, dammit!

...aaaand relax.

Will it increase demand to go there? (Hypothetically)
If someone wanted to make a journey to Roding Valley, it would cost pretty much the same if it was in Zone 4 or 5. I suppose this is to open up the lucrative market of people who have Zone 4 but not zone 5 travelcards.

it wouldn't in terms of a single oyster journey. going beyond zone 4 means you go into the next price bracket (i think it steps up from £2 to £3 from zone 1)

Ugh, can't they make us zone 5? I wouldn't mind paying a little less.
