High Barnet to Cockfosters

I was curious to know if anyone had ever been mad enough to attempt to run/walk from High Barnet to Cockfosters.....

A map is on the attached link and this is approx 2 miles as the crow flies....To follow anything like this line you have to navigate your way around approx 1 mile of back roads which resemble a maze....!
If you stick to the main roads I would guess this is almost something like 3 miles..... :?

You'd have to be crazy to attempt that surely! Either that or a bloody good runner!

Part of the London Outer Orbital Path goes most of the way from Cockfosters to High Barnet. Would be way too slow for a Tube Challenge though, given it's mostly along dirt paths, or through residential areas.

Cheers,

Barry

I think I have seen it mentioned that someone did actually run this as part of a challenge before, can't remember who it was though...

Here you are Steve.... quoted from Geoff....

"I know of two peoplw who elected to do Cockfosters to High Barnet ON FOOT - ALL THE WAY! rather than wait for the 307"

Taken from thread: Longest 'On Foot' Section (http://www.tubechallenge.com/forum/view ... c&start=15)

There you go then, I knew that I had seen it somewhere, I couldn't be bothered to look it up though!

I'd be interested in trying that out. You see, even the very useful 307 would probably take about ten minutes. Add eight or nine minutes for waiting (and messing about at Cockfosters) and you're looking at about eighteen-and-a-half minutes.

On the other hand, running would probably take about eighteen minutes (just over two miles), and so would save one an average of thirty seconds.

The problem with this run is that it is a V shape so whichever way you are going you will have to finish with a fairly long climb.

Possibly the best option is to run from Cockfosters to New Barnet (downhill all the way - 1.3 miles) and then get a bus up the hill to High Barnet. As there are 22 buses an hour on this route it would almost certainly be quicker than running all the way.

i think i remember steve paull, the marathon runner who won the 2004 zone 1 challenge, telling us he had done this on foot. and "if a bus comes, you get it". 1.3 miles is still a fair way to run.

Steve Paull told me that he didn't like buses on Tube Relief I seem to recall... hence ran everywhere...

i think judging by the minimum waiting time for a bus at high barnet most people would be able to get down to east barnet by the time 1 came along as most of it is downhill then the bus wouldnt save u any time as it goes round the corner a little too far and the distance covered by walking people would be somewhere down mount pleasant rd as the bus got to the roundabout is anybody actually able to jog backwards to see if buses are approaching or is this too risky?

And palkanetoijala wins the award for the longest sentence in a forum post this week, with ninety-seven words. Well done palkanetoijala.

I must say well done to palkanetoijala on such a long sentence, ninety seven letters in total, which is a truely splendid achievement and one that I would find hard to surpass, given that generally speaking and in no uncertain times I tend to write very short sentences even when I have quite a lot to say on a particular subject and if I did have more to say I would find it much easier to pick up the telephone and call you rather than to go on and on for ages putting pointless posts on this forum!

I would also like to say well done to palkanetoijala for creating such an outstanding long sentence and also well done to soup dragon for creating an even longer sentence, however I don’t see the advantages of having such a long sentence because it is nice to have a gap in the words but on the whole, there are some advantages, for example, it can be hard to say it all in one go without taking a proper breath so people could challenge each other to see how many could say this very long sentence in one go and also it can turn into a nice little competition of who can make the longest sentence without going off topic and in the end, see who wins and who is very good at creating very long sentences with the most words. :)
