apparently the definition of independant witness wasn't good enough for them I think it was because they can't have two English guys break a German record.

To clarify - Andi and my attempt at the Berlin U-Bahn record has been rejected on two grounds:

1. We were unable to provide full, continuous video footage of the attempt. We provided time-stamped photos of every single station visited and videoed every single connection that was made, both internally and externally, but this was deemed insufficient as they wanted continuous footage of the entire attempt.

2. Our independent stopwatch operator was deemed to be not independent since they knew us both and therefore "could have something to gain from being such a timekeeper, and therefore is deemed non-independent". I raised the question of how anyone is supposed to find a willing, truly random member of the public (i.e. fulfilling the criteria that they do not know either of us) to be at a given start and finish station at given times with a stopwatch to time us, especially in a country where we don't speak the language, but this was ignored.

I have requested an appeal on this, but am not particularly hopeful.

That's very unfortunate. Presumably an unknown person whose time was paid for by the Challenger (i.e. a cheaper person than a Guinness rep) would presumably not be neutral either as they could be swayed by the payment! It's looking more and more as if records won't get broken any more without Guinness people appearing at the beginning and end themselves, not withstanding the desire for many hours of video footage

These records just suck now.. what more do they want or need... your time stamped video is clear evidence IMO

This is actually ridiculous. From what you've said, that sounds like enough evidence to me!

I've said it before but the Guinness Book of Records is a mere shadow of its former self. Ross & Norris McWhirter (and Roy Castle) must be spinning in their graves.
