How do people get home at the end of the day?

Post by Sillert, V.I. »

Fortunately for me, Amersham is the nearest station to home. Less fortunately, this means Upminster is a long way away.

How do people get back at the end of the day?

Is there anywhere reasonably safe to leave a car at Upminster the day before?

Or is it feasible to end at Heathrow?

Finishing at Heathrow is quite feasible - perhaps even superior to Upminster...

However, arriving at T4 at 11:50p, we discovered there is 1 (one) single taxi in service and it charged us £70 back to Amersham. You have been warned!

The advantage of finishing at Heathrow is that you can get a bit of sleep on a bench in the terminal until the first train the next morning. Also there are nightbuses from Heathrow but none from Upminster.

First time I tried, I didn't get around. Adham and I hadn't planned any accommodation at our finishing station so I don't know what we'd have done.

Second time, we also didn't get around. I was planning to walk the few miles into Romford and night bus it from there back to my house near Manor House tube. I'd have been knackered but it would have saved us £50 on B&B at Upminster.

I always drive to Amersham on the morning from where I live (Rugby).
And stay in a hotel near Upminster -- recently it has been the Campanile in Basildon.

Little do you know that the route 248 buses actaully connect with the last District line arrival at Upminster and thus finish at around 0100!

Would of saved a good few mile walk for the N15!

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Not according to the timetable they don't. Last 248 towards Romford is at 0010, which is pushing it somewhat even if you end up at Upminster at 0005 a la Geoff 'n' Neil.

Cheers,

Personally I like to walk home... One of the added bonuses of living in Upminster!

Upminster is safe enough to leave a car for the day, the station car park does have some security cameras and there's normally lots of people around - although this is not a guarantee it'll be fine. Normally unless you've got a blatantly expensive car with tons of electronics on the front seat I shouldn't expect any problems.

Please remember that Heathrow is a privately owned building and the night staff are perfectly within their rights to throw you out onto the street if they wish, you have been warned!

Romford is not far to walk if you know where you're going, or you can get Station Cars to take you there - a lot cheaper than all the way into central at least.

Campanile in Basildon? You've got to be kidding me - that's miles away!

Make a note of that, folks :D

Campanile isn't too far away, iirc it took about 10 minutes in the car.
