The Definitive (?) Poll

Post by Root »

I hope this poll can prove definitive and put an end to the discussion, but of course that is up to you. At the very least I hope it can give a consistent guideline to anyone who wants to attempt the now infamous...

BOTTLE CHALLENGE.

So, you are fully aware what the issue is here: Should Marylebone and Edgware Road on the Bakerloo line be deemed inside or outside of the "bottle" that is formed of the Circle line and everything inside it?

The implications are straightforward. If they are deemed to be inside, challengers attempting to do "the bottle" will be required to visit them. Conversely, if they are declared to be outside, then they can be ignored.

I think every possible argument for and against their inclusion has been brought up, so I will give a brief outline of the main points here to avoid the need for them to come up in this thread again.

For their inclusion:
Going by the standard London Underground map, they are inside the "bottle".
Most challengers who have attempted the "bottle" so far have visited them, so to exclude them now would de-value the current records.
Geographically, the Circle line does not really resemble a bottle, so the whole challenge is based on the map.

Against their inclusion:
Geographically, they are outside of the Circle line, which makes up the "bottle".
On some alternate maps they are outside of the "bottle".
Maps are always changing, while geographically they have not moved - it is more consistent to exlude them.

Now, I don't want to see anyone else posting their arguments no matter what their stance - if you really must discuss it further, see the "Bottle Challenge Question" thread. Simply vote Yes or No, and if you want to declare how you voted them do so, but post nothing else.

And finally, regardless of what you think the rules should be, I urge you to follow the result of this poll if you ever attempt the challenge, at least if you want your time to be considered official and go on the list of records.

This poll will have to end at some point, so I will arbitrarily say the end of June. That should be enough time for everyone who cares to vote.

I said it in the pub on friday- just look at Harry Beck's original, and decide from that!

I think the two Bakerloo stations should be included. It does not matter how the map looks in different places or geographical facts. The only thing that matters is the definition of this challenge. The earliest (and perhaps the only exisiting), and thus deciding, definition I've found is:

http://www.geofftech.co.uk/tubechallenge/alt_circle/

which clearly states that there are 50 stations in the challenge - and the only reasonable interpretation of that number is to include Edgware Road (Bakerloo) and Marylebone.

Come on guys... play fair, Ollie said not to add any further comments to this thread & he gave a balanced argument for both camps.
p.s. if you look on the homepage of this site under bottle challenge it says 48 stations, neither Geoff or Neil set the rules, its for the Forum to decide!!! :D

Without adding to the argument, I have uploaded the original map from TG's site to mine (hope he doesn't mind - sorry, TG).
If you're interested, the URL of it is http://www.jonnylyon.net/clbmap.jpg.

I think they should be included, as I was the first person to seriously attempt the bottle challenge (as far as I'm aware), and I included them. So there!

I am abstaining from this vote as it holds no interest for me :-)

Can't you abuse your moderator privleages and make a third option on the poll?

A third option is a good idea, but this would probably have alterted the way many people have already responded to the Poll, had 3 options been available initially :?

And then what would we do if the most popular option was "I don't care"?

If you don't care, don't vote. Simple.

Which is precisely what I'm doing :-)

I can't see what the score currently is ...
