Random 15 Championship 2023/24: Round 1

Post by tangy »

Welcome to the 2023/24 Random 15 season!

If you are new to all of this:
Welcome to the 2023/24 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone or network e.g. DLR onto the challenge. So are you ready to take on the Random 15 championship?

The rules and scoring are unchanged from previous seasons but if anyone is not familiar with them, or needs a refresh, you can view them here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm

We start the new season with the now customary Champion's Twist as provided by the winner of last's season's championship- Andrew Chilcraft.

The details for round 1:
When: Saturday 16th September 2023 12:30 UK local time.
Variant: Normal round with 15 LU stations in zones 1 and 2 only... however there will be second envelope that challengers may open if they dare (see below)!
Meet up: Holborn (meet outside main entrance on Kingsway).
Post challenge pub: NEW VENUE: The Blue Posts, 81 Newman Street, Marylebone W1T 3EU (in between Oxford Circus and TCR, north of Oxford Street).
Time limit to complete: Twist round 6 hours, but unlikely to need all that!

The way the twist will work:
We all start at Holborn as normal and open envelope 1 which will contain the usual list of 15 stations. During the challenge approaching your 10th visited station on the list you can either stick with the 5 remaining stations you already know on the normal 15 station list and carry on or decide to gamble and open the second envelope upon arrival at your 10th station which will contain another 5 stations.

If you choose the latter these 5 stations you reveal will REPLACE those you have yet to visit on the first list and you then visit those on the second list instead.

If you choose the former and stick with the first list of 15 stations then a valid completion will be one that presents to me an unopened envelope 2 at the results alongside the usual log of your route.

Closures affecting the challenge:
District: No service Earl's Court - Richmond/Ealing Broadway.
Piccadilly: No service Hyde Park Korner - Northfields/Rayners Lane.
Waterloo & City: Usual weekend closure.

Other closures to be aware of:
DLR: No service Bank/Tower Gateway - Poplar
Overground (East London line): No service New Cross Gate - Crystal Palace/West Croydon.
Thameslink: No Thameslink at London Bridge - diversions via Elephant & Castle.

As it is a new season, the leaderboard is wiped clean and everyone starts again on zero.

Who's in?

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

So what happens if you open the second envelope and some or all of the stations have already been visited? Do you have to visit them again?

Oh boy!

I would guess that they would have to be visited again, but I'll await the BERC's clarification.

Presumably there will be a procedure so that no stations are listed in both envelopes. Get the randomizer to select 20, the first 15 go in envelope 1 and the other 5 go in envelope 2.
I presume the question is what if you happen to have passed through some of the other 5 on your way to complete the first 10. I'd say "tough", you have to go there again. Hasn't there been previous twists with two envelopes, half in each? And didn't the same apply?

If the duplication procedure is not in place then I would assume so....

Yes please Tangy, if you could please ensure there are no repeat stations in envelope 2.

Yeah, you can't visit a station before you know about it. Any stations revealed in E2 have to be visited after opening the envelope.
