Platform 1

Post by tintin »

I was at a station earlier which didn't have a platform 1. Or a platform 2.

Ignoring stations which have platform letters rather than numbers, are there any others where the numbering doesn't include a "1"?

I am based at a station that doesn't have either a platform 1 or a platform 2.

But unless you tell us which station you were at, we can't answer your question ...

Shrewsbury is another example. No platform 1 or 2.

Yeah, Shrewsbury was the one I was at. I've learnt from another source that there are two others in England, and two in Scotland.

I think Bridlington is probably the winner, with no platform 1, 2 or 3, just 4-6.

Of course there are a good number of stations which don't have platform numbers because they only have one platform so there is no need to number them!

The sole remaining standard gauge platform at Aberystwyth has an interesting history. It was originally the only platform, but as the station expnaded, it became platform 3, with 1 and 2 being for the Carmarthen line and 4 and 5 being extra platforms for points north. At some point this numbering was reversed, so Platform 3 remained Platform 3 but all other numbers changed. Now it is back to being the only platform in use, and has no number.

When the extra track along the Lea Valley line was laid to accomodate the Meridian water shuttle, the new platforms at Tottenham Hale and Northumberland Park were numbered platform 2 with the platforms on the main lines renumbered to 3 (up) and 4 (down), this is with future proofing in mind if a fourth track is added.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!
