1st Proper Attempt at a challenge

Post by fischer21 »

Hi All,

I am new here and have got into tube challenging quite late in life but have always found the idea of plotting routes etc.. quite interesting.

I looked at the various challenges and decided on Roads Streets and Lanes and as I had a day off thought I would give it a go - unforunately the circle / district / Ham & City lines were against me as there were problems in the Barking area and there were delays throughout the day.

I pressed on regardlessly - I started at North Acton and made my way to Hanger Lane and run/jogged to Park Royal and then waited an age for a Piccadilly line to Rayners Lane - This crawled and already I was 50 mins into the challenge. I changed at Rayners Lane to the Metropolian but again everything crawled so by the time I got to Warwick Avenue via GPT anf Regents Park I decided to abort.

I had sime lunch and thought What challenge I could do that was relatively quick and didnt need the affected lines that much. I decided upto the South London Challenge.

I started at North Greenwich made my way into Central London changed onto the Bakerloo line and onto the Northern trying to work out the best way to do the Battersea Power Station - unforunately had a 8min wait for a BPS train but the bus to Vauxhall wasnt that bad.

I made my way to Morden couldnt decide which was the best way to get to Wimbledon - got out of the station just missed the bus decided to go back to South Wimbledon and tram it. Embarrassingly I got lost trying to find the tram stop (I will definately do some recon before my next challenge) which added quite a bit of time to my attempt. Eventually I ended up at Kew Gardens in a time of 2 hours 26 Mins - but as I said I lost a lot of time at Morden / South Wimbledon.

Congratulations on your first completion. Recon is all part of the process and after a while you'll get to know them well. Part of the fun is discovering the various "tricks" to get a faster time.

Hi all,

I had a day off yesterday and although it was very hot I decided to try some challenges. After my aborted attempt at the Roads,Streets and Lanes I decided to give that a go.

I started at Perivale and knocked off Hanger Lane and Rayners Lane without much delay and made my way into Central London to GPS on the Metropolian line and then up to Warwick Avenue on the Bakerloo and then got quite lucky at Edgware Road (H & C) getting a Hammersmith train within 2 minutes. Made my way across to the Dist/Picc lines at Hammersmith and went to Gloucester Rd and then again got quite lucky getting a circle line again quite quickly. Changed at Notting Hill for the Central line and went east to Mile End and onto Bow Road. Got the district line to Cannon St and made the short walk to Bank and upto Old Street. Changed at Kings Cross to do Blackhorse Rd and changed at Finsbury Park to complete the Piccadilly line stations. Headed by to Leicester Sq for my final change to the Northern and ended up at Mornington Crescent.

Final Time : 4:00:56

I had some lunch and decided to attempt the Mouse challenge. I wont bore you with the details but I started at Camden Town and Finished at Warren Street (taking the wrong exit at Euston for Euston Sq)

Final Time : 1:38: 43

Hi all,

I completed another challenge the Zone 1 one - thought I was going well but got lost at Aldgate to Algdate East so ended with a disappointing 3:20:21

Start as BPS and changed at Waterloo onto London bridge via the Jubilee Down to Elephant change to the Bakerloo and then decided to change at Embankment to the Northern. Up to Euston and change to the Bank Branch and then changed at Moorgate for the Circle Line to Paddington. Good change at Paddingtojn onto the District Line down to Earls Court. Changed to Piccadilly line to Russel Sq but the double back took ages. Holburn to Liverpool Street. Took the 1st train at Liverpool Street (H & C) to Aldgate East managed to get confused in finding Aldgate (Normal go Aldgate -> Aldgate East). Circle round to Sloane Sq and double bck to Victoria and finally Victoria Line down to Vauxhall.

Couple of silly mistakes but am stil learning

I think most of us have been there - I exited Aldgate East aiming for Aldgate. Unfortunately the underground sign I could see in the distance was...the other entrance to Aldgate East!

The best way to orient yourself is find Sports Direct when you leave the station. Now turn so it's behind you then walk away from it and you will find Aldgate without any problems

Is that the full route? I can't figure out where you did the western end of the Central Line or Regent's Park.
