ALTERNATIVE CHALLENGE IDEA: Not London Challenge

Post by RJSRdg »

Whilst riding round during today's jollity (or perhaps during my extended wait at Stratford International), it struck me that there are a number of stations on the Tube which share their names with places in the UK which are outside London, such as:

LIVERPOOL Street
STRATFORD
LEICESTER Square
OXFORD Circus
RICHMOND
NEWBURY Park
WARWICK Avenue
PRESTON Road
LANCASTER Gate
GLOUCESTER Road

Note Farringdon does not count, as Faringdon in Oxfordshire is spelt differently.

Unfortunately, looking at that list, five of them are on the Central Line, so it may not be a terribly good Challenge!

In which case, the challenge is to visit all of them on the tube, and then all of them by National Rail. All in the same day.

Depends on what criteria you use for the non-London locations. Just off the top of my head, there's a Woodford in Greater Manchester & a Brixton in Devon. I'm sure that there are many more examples.

There is a Woodford in Greater Manchester - birthplace of the Avro Lancaster and Vulcan bombers, and where I did a week's work experience many years ago - but it is Brixham in Devon, not Brixton.

No - there is a village in Devon called Brixton, as well as the much larger Brixham.

There is a Kenton in both Devon & Suffolk, a Loughton in both Milton Keynes & Shropshire, a Harrow in Caithness, a Northwood in Derbyshire, etc. Also Bromley-by-Bow would give Bromley. Perhaps the criterion should be that the alternative location actually has a station, which I think would eliminate Richmond from your original list.

Quite right - it's on the road from Plymouth to Yealmpton. I've driven through it quite a few times :)

Richmond does have a station. It just doesn't have any track.... ;-)
