I'll be chatting to my friend (who's a driver on the sub-surface) this afternoon. I'll ask her - she loves telling me about all the "automated" stuff that doesn't work properly.

I've been traveling almost daily from Aldgate to Edgware Road and haven't noticed this happen once - the driver is still opening and closing (unless the usual time limit overrides) the doors as usual.

The driver still operates the doors he/she just now unlocks them instead of opening them on the ato parts from my experience

You're basing your comment on one experience of travelling on the SSR between King's Cross St. Pancras and Liverpool Street. I'm stating my comment based on near daily travel on the SSR between Aldgate and Edgware Road. I would suggest that your experience is perhaps the anomaly?!

Have spoken briefly to my driver friend. There is an issue with the doors not opening immediately. I'll get more info on Friday.

perhaps my driver was just unlocking the doors then, your evidence seems much more reliable than mine, anyways back to my original point if the doors arent opening automatically precious seconds could be lost.

I've spoken to my driver friend again. This is what happens on the Circle/H&C, she doesn't know if it's different on the District.

On the automated sections of the sub-surface, the drivers still open and close the doors, not just unlock them. She's noticed that there can be a delay in some doors opening. She mentioned Mansion House eastbound being particularly bad, where the front doors of the first carriage open a few seconds after the rest of the doors on the train. The drivers can't do anything about it, and unfortunately, passengers pressing the button won't make any difference either. No-one is particularly sure what causes it, but may be something to do with the time taken for the onboard computer to connect to the station system.

Additionally, it's up to the driver to decide whether doors shut automatically after 30 seconds to protect the "ambience", or to override that and leave them open. She likes to leave them open so confused tourists don't get left on the platform.
