A) no longer a legal requirement
B) if 1 operator has different rules from another its not going to work. People will get confused where their mandatory and where not. Im confused already before the train companies have their own say on this.

a) TfL are going to make it a condition of carriage to wear a mask unless exempt. So effectively it's a legal requirement.
b) For once in my life I agree with Grant Shapps (I hope that doesn't happen too often) .... you can't drink alcohol on TfL services, but you can on trains, so that's a similar distinction that most people seem to cope with.
Not a plus one

For how long - who knows. I don't want to get into the pros and cons of this approach, that's not appropriate for here. But I wouldn't do any challenging, personally, until that requirement is lifted.

With that in mind, I can't see these going ahead?

From a practical viewpoint, the problem with this decision is that it could be indefinite - do we therefore suspend Tube Challenging indefinitely? I personally don't want to see that but I understand people's reservations about doing challenges with masks on

For what it's worth, I wore a mask when doing the Roads, Streets and Lanes challenge last year. Admittedly, there were a couple of long surface interchanges where I could take it off, and, as most of you know, I don't move fast, but I think it's doable.

I think that it could well be demand-driven and it would be up to Tangy to work out how many people would need to turn up for a challenge event for it to be viable. You can’t force people to challenge, and as I’ve said I find it uncomfortable to mask up so it’s not for me.

Ditto - although I've managed to wear a mask for 3 hours at home, the longest I've managed in any genuine environment is about 45 minutes(*). I struggle particularly in hot or humid locations (so that rules out the deep lines anyway), and TBH I'm not sure I'd be confident about travelling on a crowded Underground train (or even whether it would be responsible to do so).

(*) Which means the furthest I've travelled in the last 15 months is Didcot!

We're potentially going to have the interesting situation on stopping trains between Reading and London that Crossrail trains will require a mask and GWR trains won't. (Which ironically in some ways is quite a neat solution to the problem....) Will be interesting to see which services people prefer to travel on. Personally I think the 387s are lower risk anyway owing to the presence of bulkheads and gangway doors.

Politics aside they are making it a condition of travel so will have the legal write to refuse travel and have you removed from the system.

Personally my main problem now with wearing a mask while tube challenging now comes down to the part where my glasses steam up. I'm too squeamish for contact lenses and the optician says my prescription is out of range for daily ones anyway. Like it or lump it TFL are going to require masks for a while yet and they do have the authority to mandate things on their services whether certain people like it or not.

Some challenges are by their very nature less of a problem with a mask on regardless as they involve few indoor interchanges. The ones that come to mind are Tramlink, Overground, DLR, South London all modes, and the triple crown we did a few years ago. To some extent a zone 2 & 3 only twist round of the r15 would also work. Maybe it would be a worth starting to think about having a few events like that in and build up as requirements change?

I think there was a "zone 1 is banned" R15 about 10 years ago. That might work for that reason.

How about a 'South of the River' Network Rail only R15? (Possibly Tube to be 'banned' - being all deep lines south of the river - so masks would only be required on LO, DLR or buses if used).

If my journey from hell today is anything to go by (as I write, only the Northern and Victoria lines aren’t delayed/suspended due to covid isolations) then a Tube Olympics won’t be possible until they bring in the isolation changes for double vaxxed people.

What I’m most annoyed about is TFL charging me £3.85 for being in and out of West Harrow within 60 seconds or so after the supervisor said “no trains, look elsewhere”. I then managed to get a bus up to Harrow and get the LAST TRAIN OF THE DAY… at 9:45am!
