London Bus 24

Post by tufnellpark »

On Sunday 12th Jan, I am trying to complete London bus routes 1-24 in 24 hours, using an Oyster bus cap of £4.50, covering 225 miles and 1200 bus stops. Start 04:30 but can I finish in time? Follow my bus journey @BusesOnthe

Good luck!

Should that be @BusesOnthe?

Yes indeed. When I set up my account for my bus journeys, Twitter accepted the name but unhelpfully changed it to @BusesOnthe - still confuses me.

And the @Onthebuses account seems to belong to someone who's posted three times that they don't know what they're doing and then gave up  Aren't Twitter talking about getting rid of dormant accounts? You could put in a bid for a name change.

Just realised that you'll be in my neck of the woods for this. Depending on what time you reach Brunel Road (#7), we can provide a loo stop, cup of tea or water top up, if you need it.

A very long Sunday 12th Jan spent riding red London buses. 15/24 routes completed, 140 miles in 18 hours and 25 mins. Started on #21 from Lewisham at 04:35 and finished on #3 at Crystal Palace at 23:00. Lost one hour during the day due to a very slow #11, an early departure #4 😠and a missing #1 at Canada Water. Each delay cost me 20 mins. Otherwise all went according to plan. 😊

I'm intrigued by this one - I'm trying to see if it could be done in Reading! Couple of queries about the rules:

1) Must the buses be done in numerical order?
2) I assume the complete route must be travelled rather than just one stop (otherwise it's just a fairly simple scaled down version of All The Buses!). Do return journeys have to be done on each route, or is only a single journey needed? If the latter, if a route goes round in a loop at one end, presumably you need to travel right round the loop until you reach the first stop on a stretch of road the bus travels both ways? What if there is some other section of route where the route varies depending on direction (e.g. a one way system?).
3) Where two routes traverse the same stretch of road, do you have to travel the same stretch of road twice?
4) If a route has suffixes, because it splits towards one end, do all the suffixed routes have to be travelled?

Reading doesn't have a complete set of routes from 1-24, as 8, 12, 18 and 20 are missing - on the other hand there are a lot of suffix and 'X' routes. If not taken in numerical order, an out-of-sequence 26 would probably be easy to work in, as it parallels the 15, and it shouldn't be too difficult to add a 25 in at the end.

However assuming full routes are needed, the challenge would take in Newbury, Wokingham, Bracknell and Fleet (Peppard as well if the 25 was included), all of which are well outside the day ticket zone so the fares would rack up!

Some answers, although uou can make your own rules up.
1) In any order.
2) Yes complete routes but just a single journey.
3) Yes I did.
4) Doesn’t apply in London, so up to you.
I wouldn’t get too hung up on which direction to go and loops. Just cover the complete route in the best direction for you.

Hope this helps.
