Lyon Metro

Post by michael_churchill »

I will soon be going to France on holiday, and I'm going to have a go at the complete Lyon Metro system. It has 40 stations on 4 lines, one of which is a converted rack railway which claims to have the steepest metro station in Europe. There are not a lot of connections between termini, so there will be a lot of double-backing, and it should take around 2 hours.

That particular picture shows the end of one of the two funiculars that run from "Vieux Lyon" (Old Lyon) station. Being funiculars, there are two trains connected by cable, one goes up as the other comes down. The funiculars go to the top of two separate hills. One is more touristy as it goes up to a landmark church. The one pictured is more for regular punters. Both are integrated into the local transport system.

The steep station I was talking about is "Croix-Paquet" on line C which is a proper rack railway. A cogged rack between the rails engages with a cogged wheel underneath the train to help it up the hill. Because of the gradient, it is apparently the only station on the Lyon Metro network that is not fully accessible.
