24 Hours on London Underground - 19th August 2016

by 24HoursonTube
With the commencement of the Night Tube on London Underground on Friday 19th August 2016, I am aiming to be one of the first members of the public to spend 24 hours riding the London Underground from Friday through to Saturday 20th August.

I will be aiming to raise a modest amount for The Samaritans;

If any 'Tube Challengers' feel able to, please visit my page -

Many thanks

On BBC Radio London just now from Waterloo, I notice, this evening I will get a link and timing in the iPlayer, available for a month. Here it is, at 0:17:53 in this.

Very good. 26 hours!, and they said 20 minutes is too long for some people. I assume you did no OSIs in the time, so I will mention, I think this has been suggested: a no ticket barriers FNC! Did you do it, and did you try?

The question I'm wondering is - what is the greatest amount of time anyone has ever spent on the London Underground network in one go?

I suppose the maximum amount of time possible would be from the first underground train of the day on Friday morning (I believe this is the 0438 from Hammersmith H&C) to whenever and wherever the the very latest train terminates on Monday morning.

Wait until the end of 2017 and you may be able to do three consecutive nights of night tube on the 29/30/31 Dec.

Could get interesting if someone swiped in on their Oyster Card on 29th December and didn't swipe out until 1st Jan!

Even using Travelcards could be 'fun' though I suppose you could always buy a weekly season ticket.

The cost of the direct five-mile journey between Hammersmith and Waterloo stations would have been £4.80, but using his Oyster card mean it cost him £2.90 with discount.
Huh? The Oyster fare from Hammersmith to Waterloo may be £2.90, but I think he may have exceeded the maximum journey time.

Then again on his JustGiving page he says he donated the Oyster card to the London Transport Museum, so he may not even know.

On his JustGiving page he doesn't specifically mention the Uxbridge branch of the Piccadilly line, but that doesn't mean he didn't do it.

This does end with the Jubilee and Central lines, so I reckon there's something in this...

I presume by 'No ticket barriers', that excludes the ticket barriers at the start and end stations - though I seem to remember one of Geoff's videos highlighting a way into one station which doesn't involve crossing a barrier (I'm sure TfL will have fixed that by now though).

I believe the tube stations accessible without passing through ticket barriers are the ones on here, minus Olympia which now has barriers, plus:

- Bank at certain times (via DLR lift)
- Kentish Town at certain times (side entrance)
- Waterloo (W&C only)

Also remember the Tube can be accessed from the DLR (e.g. Stratford High Street for Stratford), Tramlink (e.g. Dundonald Road for Wimbledon), the Overground (e.g. South Acton for Gunnersbury) and National Rail (e.g. Essex Road for Highbury and Islington) - all of which have a lot of stations without barriers, so it's not hard by any stretch of the imagination!

If we're going for "no barriers" rather than "just tube", I think a morning Ken O would be possible via Earl's Court and then West Brompton?

The start and end stations I think are allowed, as it was a 1-9 single ticket that couldn't be put in any barriers, as it would take the ticket, so you had to only leave the tube network at the end. Would a Z1-9 single be valid on Overground or Southern, or would you need to go the Olympia in the evening (and return) or end there?
