He'd previously been deputy mayor of Boston, and when he was offered the job he was in the running for the Democratic nomination as candidate for the mayor of Boston. That's why I had to be a little careful about the "Are you a politician?" question.

Wow! The name just came to me whilst at work an hour ago. So during my coffee break I looked him up, and found a 1983 story. Thought it was worth a guess. Proved right!
