Well you've just made it much easier, because...

Yes! (19/40)
  • Righto, so last Friday I found myself in Winchester Cathedral. But whereabouts? The correct description will place me accurate to within one square metre. Keep asking!

Organs are pretty big things! But I will assume by this question, you mean the organ console (where it is played from). And the anwer is:

Yes!! :D Got it in 22 questions!

That's where I found myself last Friday night, playing the marvellous organ in Winchester Cathedral. It's a beautiful, unique, 19th-century instrument with a special history. It was the largest organ on show at the 1851 Great Exhibition, and was installed in Winchester in 1854. Undergoing several modifications since, it now has 79 speaking stops, and 5,500 pipes.

And it certainly makes a noise when you pull all the stops out. Apart from the organ scholar (who had invited me), I had the cathedral to myself for an hour, so I did just that. How the building shook. Great fun!
  • So, GuyBarry to start the next one?

Well yes. In "The Lost Chord", when I hear the words "Seated one day at the organ" I don't imagine that the bloke has got his head stuck up against the organ pipes :D

Did you think we'd get it that quickly? I thought it was very good teamwork.

What a privilege! As a child I was honoured to spend some of my time in the organ loft at Westminster Abbey. Admittedly I was just turning the pages rather than playing the instrument, but it was still rather thrilling.

Certainly. I've already had an idea.

Indeed, I thought there was a chance. Once we'd narrowed down the location, I thought people may know enough about me to know I'm an organist, and deduce that I might have may hands on such an instrument somewhere. I thought 20 questions would be pushing it, but 40 would be adequate. And 22 was all it required!

I think I need to visit and play more spectacular organs around the country. My local one is very old electric technology, and certainly not the best sounding instrument in the world. But it does the job we need it for, just about.

(So GuyBarry - can you get me onto Westminster Abbey organ?!) :D
