Let's blow the clouds away and give you some clear details about Zone 1 day 2013, since some members still don't know what date it is being held!

Organiser: This is pretty obvious! It will be myself.

Date: Friday 31st May 2013.

Pre challenge meet up: As in the past couple of years the meet up location will be at Liverpool Street mainline station (on the upper level outside McDonalds). Take escalator/stairs up from the concourse opposite platforms 2/3.

Time: Meet up time of 12:00 noon at Liverpool Street for draw of the starting station. We will start the challenge promptly at 13:00 from the mystery station.

After challenge meet up: As usual this will be the upstairs lounge bar of the Horse & Groom pub at 128 Great Portland Street. This room has been booked for our sole use from 16:30-19:30 on the day.

So who am I expecting? Hands up please...

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

I'm coming, to the best of my ability. Can't think of a reason why I would not be able to.

Most stations in two hours? Why not do an extra 40 mins and go for the record!

Time for the small print, I mean the rules....

Zone 1 2013- The Rules of the challenge.

1.1: The aim is to visit all 64 London Underground stations that form London fare zone 1 in the fastest time. The current time to beat is 2 hours, 40 minutes and 44 seconds. **also see rule 2.1.

1.2: To "visit" a station means to arrive at or depart from (or both) all 64 Zone 1 stations on a LU train. You are NOT required to get off at every station but you can of course alight at any station to change lines or transfer to a nearby station. If a station is temporarily closed for any reason e.g. security alert, rebuilding etc. then a "pass through" of the station is accepted (such as Edgware Road (Bakerloo) on this occasion).

1.3: Transfers between stations must only be undertaken on foot, by bus or by NR trains.

1.4: Challengers are required to give basic evidence of their route taken and finishing stations plus the time they completed the challenge in. A stopwatch is useful for recording your overall time.

1.5: Challengers may compete in the zone 1 challenge as an individual (solo) or in small teams up to 5 people. Each team must be required to think of a team name for themselves- there will be a best team name prize, so the wittier the better.

1.6: All challengers are requested to be at the specified meeting point by 1215 on the day of the challenge. A starting station will then be drawn at random (from all 64 Z1 stations) excluding those stations that have been start stations in previous years, these being Vauxhall, St. James's Park, Sloane Square, King's Cross, Angel, Westminster, Waterloo, St. Paul's and Aldgate East. In addition since Edgware Road (Bakerloo) is closed for rebuilding this will be excluded from the draw.

1.7: The challenge will begin at the station that was picked out at random on the first train AFTER 13:00:00 hours. When I officially start the challenge you MUST take the FIRST train in the direction you wish to head. If a second train is described on the board going to the same destination as your team, you cannot wait for it and take that instead. ** see also rule 2.5 for more details

1.8: Your time starts when the doors firmly close on the first train you board at the start station and the challenge ends when the first member of your team physically sets foot on the platform at your finishing station. Timings must be noted down in hours, minutes and seconds.

1.9: Once you have started your stopwatch and departed you may NOT return to the start and reset the stopwatch. Should two or more teams start and finish on the same trains (at the same station) they are ranked equal regardless of the exact measured time.

1.10: If you finish by running/transferring to or departing from your last required station, you must keep the stopwatch going until you arrive at the NEXT station in any direction. If you are still going after 4 hours since the start of the challenge, stop your timing at the next station and count up how many stations you visited up to that point then head direct to the pub.

1.11. By entering yourself into the Zone 1 challenge you abide by these rules. Any disputes will be dealt with by the BOZO whose decision is final.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Station specific rulings:

2.1: Paddington (H&C/Circle) is separate from Paddington (Bakerloo/District) and Edgware Road (Circle) is separate from Edgware Road (Bakerloo), all four of these stations must be visited individually.

2.2: Should Baker Street by picked as a start station, teams wishing to travel clockwise on the Circle must try and catch the FIRST train out to thier first interchange station (be it a Met or Circle) despite leaving from different platforms.

2.3: Should High Street Kensington be picked as a start station, teams wishing to travel to Earl's Court should board the FIRST train out (be it an Olympia or a Wimbledon train) despite these leaving from different platforms.

2.4: Should Edgware Road (Circle) be picked as a start station, teams wishing to travel anti-clockwise on the Circle line (via Bayswater) must try and catch the FIRST train to thier first interchange station (be it Circle or District) despite leaving from different platforms. Teams wishing to travel to Paddington can choose which one they wish to visit first (remembering that Paddington is two separate stations, so both Paddington stations must be visited).

2.5: This also means e.g. for a Farringdon start, a team may decide to wait (say) for an eastbound Hammersmith & City train (for Aldgate East), a clockwise Circle for travel beyond Aldgate or any SSL train for Liverpool Street. However a team MUST NOT wait for the correct sequence (like H&C-Met-Circle and expect to make the Aldgate run to catch that Circle train!)

2.6: This is only a bit of fun, thus getting train numbers and/or logging of arrival and departure times at each station is not required (though you may do so if you wish). This is not the official Guinness World Record attempt!
----------------------------------------------------
General Advice:

3.1. We all know we are competing against each other but please take care when doing inter-station runs along corridors and escalators, other members of the public may not be as easy on their feet or know the Underground as well as we do!

3.2. Please do not hold the train doors open for an excessively amount of time, if your team mates are too far behind you, let the train go and wait for them to catch up

3.3. Don't be fooled in thinking that this is an "easy" challenge, it isn't! There will be lots of changing trains/interchanging to other lines involved which can be more intensive than on other challenges.

3.4. It is a good idea to wear light coloured comfortable fitting clothing as you can get hot very quickly on the challenge plus only bring what you really need to compete on the challenge, extra weight whilst running only slows you down!

You've left out St Paul's from the list of excluded stations, which was the starting station in 2011.

Timetable for the day (times will be adhered to):

Pre 12:00:
All challengers to start gathering at the the meet up point at Liverpool Street. Here you can decide who to form a team with (or go solo). Each team will be given an "entry card" and a copy of the Z1 challenge diagram, which you can either fill in there and then or on your way round. There is a prize for the best team name.

12:15:
Draw of the start station. Once this is announced make your way to this starting station.

12:55:
All challengers to meet up outside the starting station (street side of the ticket barriers), details will be given where exactly to meet if it is large station once the start station is announced.

13:00:
You can start the challenge on the first train in your chosen direction AFTER 13:00:00 (use the next train board clock for this if there is one). You have four hours to complete.

Once you have completed the challenge please make your way to the Horse & Groom pub (128 Great Portland Street) by 1745. We will be in the upstairs bar. Please hand your completed entry card and Z1 diagram (showing route taken) to me (Tangy).

18:00:
Results read out and prizes given to the podium positions (plus best team name).

18:15:
Quiz. Once quiz is finished rest of the evening is for darts.

If Edgware Road (H&C & Circle) is chosen, presumably:
- If you wish to go to Paddington then can choose whether to go to Paddington (H&C/Circle) or Paddington (District/Circle/Bak) as they are different stations served by different departures.
- If you wish to go to Earls Court or Gloucester Road (& stations beyond), again you can wait for the right train.

But if you wish to go to any one of Paddington (District/Circle), Bayswater, Notting Hill Gate, or High Street Kensington, do you have to go on the first train since they are all served by both District and Circle line trains which depart from Platforms 3 and 2 respectively, which are separated by a footbridge, or can you choose which one to take?

I hope to do the quiz, but will need to leave by 19:00 at the latest (dependent on which solution I adopt for my sartorial challenge that evening).
