Rare Entries Quiz XX

It's been a little while since the last one of these (indeed, the results for Rare Entries Quiz XIX are still unannounced...), so I thought that I'd do another one. The theme for this round is Geography. The rules are as per Neils sticky thread here: http://www.tubeforum.co.uk/forum/index. ... =viewtopic

The deadline shall be at 21:17 on Monday 15th October 2012, good luck!

Question One: Name a nation in the continent of Africa whose capital city begins with the letter A.

Question Two: Name a nation that ceased to be a Commonwealth Realm between the years of 1965 and 1975 inclusive. (For avoidance of doubt, this question implies that a nation was a Commonwealth Realm at some point during this period, but was no longer so as at 31 December 1975).

Question Three: Name a river in the United Kingdom of length greater than 100 miles (using wikipedia as a source).

Question Four: Name a unitary authority of England that has a population of less than 140,000.

Question Five: Name a country in Europe whose national flag consists of only two colours.

Question Six: Name an official language of the United Nations.

Question Seven: Name a peak of the Himalayan range of elevation greater than 8,200m.

Question Eight: Name a country whose name ends in -stan. (Note that for avoidance of doubt, this refers to the English name for these countries, hence Hayastan being the native name for Armenia is NOT a valid answer).

Question Nine: Name a London borough that is currently under sole Conservative political control.

Question Ten: Name one of the cities that compete for the Golden Snowball Award.

I decided that as all the end times seem to be arbitrary anyway that I would just opt for a completely random end time! Don't go missing the deadline now though...

Correct answers:
Guyana - greatkingrat, snudge27
Joined the Commwealth in 1966.
Malta - The Raven
Joined the Commonwealth in 1964.
Sierra Leone - tubeguru, tractakid, Going Underground
Joined the Commonwealth in 1961.
Malawi - al
Joined the Commonwealth in 1964.
Incorrect answers:
Pakistan - barrykas - Didn't leave the Commonwealth Realm in the period identified
I refer you to The Commonwealth Yearbook;

"Joined Commonwealth:1947 (left in 1972, rejoined in 1989)"

For completeness:

New Zealand joined the Commonwealth in 1931 and Botswana joined in 1966.

As such, I stand by my answer of Pakistan as being the only country that left the Commonwealth in the specified period, as all the others either joined during that period or were already Commonwealth members beforehand and didn't leave.

Steveoo wasn't asking about countries that left the Commonwealth, he was asking about countries that ceased to be a Commonwealth Realm which is a different thing.

I imagine that Steveoo intended to fox us with that one. I thought he meant countries leaving the Commonwealth, too, until I found that there were no countries that fitted the description!

I saw the City of London on a map with the rest of the boroughs, I didn't read the note at the bottom which said it wasn't actually a borough. It's constituency is Conservative, at least. haha
