Spoon is a state of play, not unlike knip, when a player has either

a) attempted an illegal move
b) cut a virtual diagonal (see Stovold 13 verses 144-153, "Diagonals, the cutting thereof")
c) played a lateral, overhead or transverse strile in the Inner Circle (Kings Cross being in knip) or Outer Circle (East Ham inverted).

Spoon renders a player unable to perform blocking moves until the state of spoon "expires", or until a suitably impressive move is played forcing the umpire to overturn the immediately relevant Spoon ruling.
