A Supernova exploded within the Milky Way and visible with the naked eye. Though there have been others observed in other galaxies more recently.

Is it the fact that this is the Julian calendar date
Or it happened many years before and the light only then reach earth?

Your second theory is correct. The supernova did not occur on that date - it happened 20,000 years earlier (as the star was 20,000 light years from Earth).

But I won't be too hard on you - I'm an amateur astronomer myself and you don't often see astronomy questions in quizzes.
