Maybe we could start a completely non-rail related trivia thing too, seeing as it is so popular around here. Something like: one person chooses their favourite subject (sport, music, history etc) and sets half a dozen or ten questions. Whoever scores highest takes over as quizmaster for the next week.

The problem with that, sadly as with pretty much any internet/forum based trivial/general knowledge quiz is that the use of google etc renders such quizzes pointless. With regards to Tangys railbenders, I assume that the answers aren't easily google-searchable as they are rather specialised questions.

No indeed, but a good collection of railway maps and books helps immeasurably. Also, if you're something of a rail geek you will probably be OK on Railbenders.

A lot of Tangy's questions have been un-Google-able simply because of the niche they occupy.

Yes, that's true. But it can be worked around, in a way: if Googling the question itself yields the answer, it shouldn't be used, but if it requires a number of searches, then how is that any different from using a book to find the answer to a question?

For example, if the question is "Who is the highest wicket taker in test cricket?", then Google reveals the answer as its second hit (Muralitharan). But if the question is "How many cricket players took at least eighty test wickets in the decade 2000-2009?", that requires a bit more research. The internet will lead you the correct result in the end, but so will the Wisden Cricketer's Almanack, and in fact using the former would probably take longer.

The key is just to make the questions complex. Alternatively, we could just have simple pub-quiz-type questions and rely on people not cheating. It seems to work with Zone 1 days and indeed all minor tube challenge attempt reports. There's nothing to gain by cheating, after all.

But maybe it is a bad idea.
