No not the best station to start a full network, but which one is furthest away from Central London?

I always though it was Amersham but Wiki is saying Chesham?

I believe that Chesham is correct.

Yes Chesham is correct.

Its only 4 mins to Amersham from Chalfont & Latimer whereas its 8 minutes to Chesham.

Thank you both, it's for a quiz I have been asked to get together at our local club...

Even LU aren't sure! On one page on the website it says Chesham (at 47km from Aldgate), but on another it says Amersham (at 43km from an unspecified "central London" location)!

A quick bit of Googling gives the distance from Charing Cross (the original site, i.e. where the statue of Charles I is today) to the sand drag at Chesham of 40.029km as the crow flies, and that to the country end platform ramp at Amersham of 38.085km.

Cheers,

Barry

Yeah, Charing Cross is typically used by many companies/people/things as the central point of London (aka Central London).

"From Aldgate" would imply that they mean via the Met line, in which case Chesham is further from central London. Chesham is 47.74 km from Aldgate and Amersham is 44.64 km according to

According to my road map, Chesham is pretty much due north of Amersham. As the crow flies, it would be further away from Central London than Amersham.

Trivia: despite what TFL say, Chesham is actually more westerly than Amersham. They're very nearly on the same longitude, in fact. I remember finding that out and posting it about it on here many years ago.

Bearing that in mind, and considering that it's further north too, Chesham is definitely further from the centre.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the official measurements from Ongar yet. As any fule no, all distances on the tube are measured in kilometers from Ongar. Amersham is 84.83km from Ongar, while Chesham is 87.93km from Ongar.

The argument should thus be settled.

Why Ongar though? Why that particular station?

Because its the station furthest east on the network. (Well, not any more, of course!)
