Did you use an online Latin translator for that?

Well, let's see what I can make of it.

Ecce - lo/behold
in pictura - painted on/upon
est puella - is girl
nomine Cornelia - named Cornelia

This could have several meanings:

Behold, the painted girl is called Cornelia
Behold, the painted girl is called Cornelia (suggesting that she has actually been painted upon by someone)

And then you can be a bit loose with it:

Behold, the girl in the painting is called Cornelia
Behold, that is a painting of a girl called Cornelia

Do you remember what the translation given at the time was?

And you've been quite slack in using the abbreviated form of et cetera at the end I hasten to add. Write it out 100 times or I'll cut your balls off.

Yes, the trouble with Latin is that word order is irrelevant. It's all about whether the noun takes the accusative or the genetive or the dative and that sort of thing. I wasn't far wrong was I?

Cornelia is a Roman girl.

Do you know how many English words are either directly taken from Latin or stem from Latin. It's roughly 45 to 50%.

Agenda, agent, audio, data, genius, habitat, interim, memento, propoganda, scribe, tenet, video, virile to name but a few.

Erm, you added the last bit to that after I'd replied!

Cornelia is a Roman who likes the stuff in Habitat. :)

I'm going to get copies of well-known classics in Latin. They do Harry Potter (inter alia).

Going on a full network challenge is hardly going to furnish me with the means of understanding ancient Roman texts is it?

Mind you, declining Latin verbs won't get me a time under 16 hours so it's swings and roundabouts.

On the other hand, the structure of Latin is similar to quite a number of other languages, and having a feel for when stuff is in particular cases, or tenses, helps a lot when learning them.

scrxisi wrote:That is all I remember - it was the first line of the first chapter of Ecce Romani, which was our textbook. According to the Wikipedia article, I nearly remembered the whole line perfectly, just missing out one comma - which isn't bad going for something I last read 15 years ago!
I remember the line too - we used the same text book! There was also Flavia... "Flavia cantat" - and there was a picture of her doing just that... ah, memories! :)
