The station usage Excel files from the ORR also list the NR code for every station in the tables.

Thanks for that. I was going to scrape all the Wikipedia entries but I don't have to now. :)
There is always a better solution than scraping wikipedia.

Pity there aren't any rail stations with the code EVL.

Without having a clue, nor even knowing if it actually has a train station, my first thought was Ayr.
And now a second possibility has come to me, I know that it has a train station, so Ely is perhaps more likely?

I can see your reasoning but "AYR" not same as "Ayr". That should be a clue.
