Modern-day planning

Post by tubeguru »

I know this question makes me sound like a noob but I was wondering how people go about planning their full network challenges these days.

Back in 2004 when Geoff and I were planning our successful attempt we didn't have LU's Journey Planner that lots of people appear to use now. I was wondering just how practical it is to use something like that for a full network challenge.

It can give u quite a good sense of when the trains pull out at what time but i have learnt not to trust what journey planner says.

Well, having got as far as the run at Harrow I took the average frequency on each line at certain times of day to come up with a rough time for arrival at the next station. As a result our "on paper" time was a lot slower than what we eventually did, but still inside Jack Welsby's time.

It took me a few days to get from one end to the other what with all our contingencies for certain areas to work out times for.

Did you use the publicly available timetables for less-frequently served sections (such as currently resides on the Ken-O platform)?

(But I've just realised it wouldn't help, if you didn't know what time you might expect to get there...)

No, we had a pretty good idea that our time would be faster than Jack but we had no idea of knowing how much faster.

That's why we did two trial runs - Amersham to Knightsbridge on one day, and then back to Knightsbridge the following day to continue at the time we finished the day before! That's when we knew it would be good.

I've often considered having a go at the new ELL-less tube but I'd need to convince a certain someone fresh back in the country. I'm seeing him tomorrow.

Now you're all jumping to conclusions a bit too fast here. If I ever did another one of these it certainly wouldn't be before March. It's too bleeding cold out there for a start!
