1169 and Counting is a blog about Irish Republican history. (Does anyone know what the title refers to?)

A notable event in 1170 AD was the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral.

When Chapter 1171 came up on the list of Google results I thought someone must have uploaded an incredibly long book - but no, it's actually the New Bern, North Carolina division of the EAA, which turns out to stand for "Experimental Aircraft Association". (That took some tracking down as well!)

Heading north, the East Coast Mainline makes a long sweeping turn to the left by Cramlington, as it passes under the A1172.

1173 Anchises, discovered in 1930, is a Jupiter Trojan - one of a large group of objects that share the orbit of the planet Jupiter around the Sun.

Moving north from Cramlington, the railway heads up towards Alnmouth - near Alnwick, which saw a major battle in 1174. In the battle, which occurred on 13 July 1174, William I of Scotland, also known as William the Lion, was captured by a small English force led by Ranulf de Glanvill.

Time for another moth I think: 1175 Bramble Shoot Moth Epiblema uddmanniana, a common and widely distributed species, occupying woodland and hedgerows where bramble occurs. (By the way, the numbers are taken from "A Recorder's Log Book or Label List of British Butterflies and Moths" by J.D. Bradley and D.S. Fletcher.)

We've done Cramlington and Alnmouth. Continue up the East Coast through Edinburgh, across the Forth and Tay bridges, and eventually your train terminates in Aberdeen. This wonderful city became a Royal Borough in 1176. (Never mind the 1175 butterflies; it's midges up here!)

Having made a detour to Sweden, let's head back down the railway from Aberdeen. Soon you'll be in Arbroath, where the abbey was founded in 1178.

If you're interested in books about Northern Soul, then Central 1179: the Story of Manchester's Twisted Wheel Club, by Keith Rylatt and Phil Scott, is described as "a classic of soul literature and one of the finest examinations of a single music club ever offered up".

If you'd listened to a concert of Boulanger's music in Lincoln Cathedral, you could drive northeast to Nettleham afterwards, along the B1182.

The B1183 is a largely rural B-road in east Lincolnshire originating in Boston and finishes in Horncastle. Its current route is similar to its 1927 route. The southern most tip has now become part of the A1137
