If you're in Newcastle, but want to escape to Tynemouth for a beach day-out, you could catch the Metro. If you'd rather use road transport, your best bet is to take the A1058.

Until AD 1059, there was no fixed system of electing the Pope. The papal bull In nomine Domini, issued by Nicholas II on 13 April 1059, established the cardinal-bishops as sole electors of the Pope, a system which is still is use today.

The first papal election under the new rules was held in 1061 on Nicholas II's death. Bishop Anselmo de Baggio of Lucca was crowned as Pope Alexander II.

In UK Moths, a guide to the moths of Great Britain and Ireland, moth number 1063 is Celypha striana. It inhabits open grassy areas and flies from dusk between June and August, being attracted to light.

So you've been staying in a hotel in Acle, Norfolk (like I did once in 1993). And you decide to move on to the holiday camp at Caister-on-Sea. Just drive along the A1064.

A 72-hour-long charity football match between Stockport Albion and Manchester Rovers was played in May in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the world's longest football match. The final score was 603-462 to Stockport Albion - a total of 1065 goals scored.

In 1066 AD:
  • The big bold men of England gathered on the hill at Hastings,
    King Harold said, "When't' Normans come, we'll give the slimes a pasting!"
    When he saw a cross-eyed archer there, it caused the king to cry out;
    He said, "Put that bow and arrow down! - you'll have somebody's eye out!"

By French standards, it was a peaceful New Year's Eve. A mere 1067 vehicles were set on fire, a reduction of 10% on the previous year.

Cambridge Castle, which is now just a mound, was originally built in 1068 for William the Conqueror.

[I've been there several times - the highest point in the city at an underwhelming 33 feet!]

A report last week by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claimed that the recent rebel Syrian infighting had killed 1069 people.
