Rapid rare entries quiz

Post by GuyBarry »

This is an experiment and shouldn't be counted as part of the "official" run of rare entries quizzes. You have just over 24 hours to submit your answers to the following: the deadline is 8am on Monday 21st October. There will be no extensions. If I get two submissions or fewer, the quiz will be declared void.

Answers to me by PM only please (don't be an idiot like me and post them in the thread!).

(1) Name one of the official languages of the United Nations.
(2) Name one of the naturally occurring noble gases.
(3) Name one of Henry VIII's wives.
(4) Name an actor who has played James Bond in the Eon series of films.
(5) Name one of the states (NOT territories) of Australia.
(6) Name a country that borders Austria.
(7) Name one of Elizabeth Taylor's husbands.
(8) Name one of the Seven Dwarfs from the 1937 film.
(9) Name a year since 1975 when a UK General Election has taken place.
(10) Name any current or former UK leader of the Liberal Democrats (including interim ones).

Scoring will work on a simplified system. Your score will be equal to the number of unique correct answers you give, minus the number of wrong answers. Highest score wins. If there's a tie, then players will be ranked by the total number of unique correct answers. If there's still a tie, players will be ranked by the number of correct answers given by exactly one other player, then the number of correct answers given by exactly two other players and so on.

Assuming the quiz goes ahead, I'll reveal the answers and scores some time on Monday. Good luck!

[Edited to include the word "correct" before "answers" in four places]

Pedant alert - this is actually the correct spelling of the noun referring to multiple midgets* at the time of the release of the Disney film. It wasn't until that Tolkien chappy popularised dwarves as an alternate spelling that it was changed.

I have just seen this. Guess I won't be going to sleep just yet.

Can I request a comparison between traditional and your own scoring system please? I feel that would help the experimental success of the quiz to be analysed more effectively.

Five entries so far and one hour to go. Any last-minute attempts?

Yes, that's a good idea - I was thinking of doing that anyway.

Here are the results. I accepted answers that were incorrectly spelt but I couldn't accept "Southern Australia" for (5) - the name of the state is "South Australia", and "Southern Australia" refers to a much wider geographical area. I accepted David Steel for (10) because he was briefly joint interim leader between the party's formation and Paddy Ashdown's election in 1988.

I do apologize. I mistakenly gave your answer to question (5) as "Headless Harriet" rather than "In a right state". Not that it makes the remotest difference to the scores but one has to be accurate about these things

Agh. I did this at 2am, Southern/south, silly mistake. You knew what I meant though.

Interestingly, under the traditional system, my score would be unchanged, but GKR and GU would have tied for first if I'd have dropped the 'ern'

I couldn't accept it because (according to Wikipedia, anyway) "the term Southern Australia is generally considered to include the states and territories of Australia of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. The part of Western Australia south of latitude 26° south — a definition widely used in law and state government policy — is also usually included". I don't think it can be used as an alternative name for the state of South Australia.
Interestingly, under the traditional system, my score would be unchanged, but GKR and GU would have tied for first if I'd have dropped the 'ern'
Also under my system, I think - GKR and GU would have been on 8 each, Sam and you on 5 each. It might be an interesting exercise to go back through some of the earlier rare entries quizzes and see how much difference my system would have made. (I won't re-score the latest one in case I'm accused of trying to fiddle my own score!)

I think this quiz would have benefited from more participants. I wouldn't recommend the extremely short time limit again.

Probably not that short, but I was quite pleased by the number of entries I got. Maybe 48 hours for the next one (plus a period of notice before the quiz goes live)?

Our old system was good. Let the quizmaster judge it as we go along, in order to maximise entries.
