Zone 1 2006 : The details

Post by geofftech »

Made you look! There are no details yet, because I'm quite happy for someone else to organise it this year if it's to happen.

Any volunteers to 'make it happen' officially and organise it? I'll probably still take part, I just can't be faffed to get it all together this time.

While I have no desire to actually take part *L* I'm up for any support needed.. though, chances are I will be off in a much warmer clime then with no metro, just lots of volcanoes and rain forest!

Given that the date of the challenge will doubtless fall on the day of one of my 6 exams during May and June, I will have to decline to organise it.

Of course, if I didn't have such a mountain of impending work, I'd jump at the chance to organise it. Well, I say "jump"...

I would much desire to compete again, however.

I will assist you if you like but nothing major. Someone else can book the pub this year.

I believe Mr Marshall will be accompanying me in having a bash at it for a bit of fun (we're out of training these days) :-)

We see no point in going out again on a 275 attempt before the system changes configuration (T5, Shoreditch, ELL etc).

Okay, before our new friend goes and sets it for us, how does May 19th sound?

Queensway should be reopened by then, and thus as (apparent) organiser of the event it is my proposed date.

May 19th sounds bad to me, but only if I have an exam on the day. I can't tell you whether or not I do until halfway through March. Until then...

This is a matter of controversy indeed, but Hakan and Patrick are marvellous fellows and it would be unwise to incite unrest among the community.

Besides, whatever they say about their routes, I can still run faster than them...

I see no need defend me/us in this. How you prepare for a challenge is of course your own choice. But what you bring with you and go about the actual challenge can be discussed and even made rules about.

Example of things that could be made rules about are:
1) Using a computer en route (who wants to carry the extra weight, anyway?)
2) Using a mobile phone/walkie-talkie to obtain extra information from a support team.
3) Using a mobile phone at all (e.g. to get the content of ETA boards).
4) Bringing time tables, or other documents along.
5) Having a "point man" (in the support team) that delay trains by blocking doors...
6) Breaking any LU rules (e.g. running the wrong way through passage ways or blocking doors [yourselves]).
7) Breaking any (traffic) laws when moving between stations overground

Example of things that doesn't make an awful lot of sense to make rules about:
A) Using information not available to the public when planning (insider rule).
B) Use of pocket calculators or other tools to plan your route.
C) Use of caffein or other legal drugs during the attempt. 8)
D) Getting paid for doing it (an amateur rule).
E) Having food or drink brought to you during the day by a support team.
F) Using a dust mask when travelling (it's a bit like using oxygen when climbing Mount Everest).

My personal view is that the only items even worth discussing would be points 5, 6 and 7 above. The rest are too obvious to everyone I hope.

Fortunately(?), it's entirely up to GWR to make the rules for the GWR. :D

Precisely! If you don't do it, you die. It's as simple as that!
