Need an equation solved

Post by mullardo »

I have an equation but I cannot find anywhere online that can solve it:

y=(x^6)-(108*(x^5))+(4405*(x^4))-(87270*(x^3))+(881464*(x^2))-(4239552*x)+7418880

Can anyone help?

I take it you mean you need to solve for x?

Surely he's solving for y?

Have you tried Wolfram Alpha? I can't get it to link properly from here because of all the special symbols, so you'll have to copy and paste:

Since this is an equation in x (on one side) & y (on the other side) then without any further constraints there are an infinite number of solutions. Just pick any value for x and plug it and it will generate a value for y. Of course you may specify that x & y are integers which makes it what is known as a diophantine equation. These, in general, are hard to solve or to show that they may not have nay solutions.

Having thought about it, I suspect the question is to factorise the polynomial in x. Haven't got time to solve it now, but look at the factors of 7418880 and see if you can get any combinations of these factors to add add to 108 (with suitable choice of plusses and minuses), and then the rest may just fall out naturally.

Assuming Nigel is correct in his assumption below that the requirement is simply to factorise the polynomial, I calculate it so that the factorisation is: (x-42)(x-23)(x-16)(x-15)(x-8)(x-4).
Why do you need this anyway if you don't mind me asking?
