On a long and dull Wednesday afternoon, me and a colleague decided to see if we could remove the RFID(?) chip from one of the dud student cards, which are currently used to log into the photocopiers at work (being in control of printing said cards was probably a bad idea tbh, though it did mean that although they've now issued similar ID cards to staff, we had them earlier...). Remembering seeing something online about somebody doing a similar thing with an Oyster card, I wondered if they were the same type of card and if they were, whether my Oyster card would connect with the printers. (We couldn'[t find the website as the reason me and my colleague were messing around with dud cards was because the Internet was down...)
Anyway, fast-forward a week or so to a Friday when I was due to come up to London on the train straight after work. I don't really use a wallet, and while grabbing the stuff I needed for the weekend on the morning, made a last-minute grab of my Oyster card, and shoved it in my pocket. Which, later on, subsequently was withdrawn from my pocket while reaching for the stolen dead student card so I could log into the printers. As it was in my hand and I was stood next to the photocopier, I thought I'd give it a try, and lo and behold it worked
I've now got about four or five cards attached to my account for these, which given we've only got one of these printers in my area at work isn't too bad really...
And that, my friends, is the rather long and convoluted story of how I found out that my Oyster card works on the printers at work. Ta da!
