Both kind of...

On a long and dull Wednesday afternoon, me and a colleague decided to see if we could remove the RFID(?) chip from one of the dud student cards, which are currently used to log into the photocopiers at work (being in control of printing said cards was probably a bad idea tbh, though it did mean that although they've now issued similar ID cards to staff, we had them earlier...). Remembering seeing something online about somebody doing a similar thing with an Oyster card, I wondered if they were the same type of card and if they were, whether my Oyster card would connect with the printers. (We couldn'[t find the website as the reason me and my colleague were messing around with dud cards was because the Internet was down...)

Anyway, fast-forward a week or so to a Friday when I was due to come up to London on the train straight after work. I don't really use a wallet, and while grabbing the stuff I needed for the weekend on the morning, made a last-minute grab of my Oyster card, and shoved it in my pocket. Which, later on, subsequently was withdrawn from my pocket while reaching for the stolen dead student card so I could log into the printers. As it was in my hand and I was stood next to the photocopier, I thought I'd give it a try, and lo and behold it worked :) I just had to enter in my details to marry the card up to my account and now my Oyster card allows me to log into the printers at work.

I've now got about four or five cards attached to my account for these, which given we've only got one of these printers in my area at work isn't too bad really...

And that, my friends, is the rather long and convoluted story of how I found out that my Oyster card works on the printers at work. Ta da!

Do the printers and photocopiers debit your Oyster card when you use it? :)

My student ID can talk to the barriers at tube stations (but they just complain and show the red light), but my Oyster card cannot open the security doors at uni :(
(Nor can it operate the printers, but that's because they use the magnetic strip, rather than the RFID chip)

When you were given your student card, was it already activated, or did you have to do it yourself? I think that's the main thing in my case - if I wasn't able to self-activate the card, I wouldn't've been able to use it. I think my card probably would be able to communicate to tube station barriers as well, just not open them.

Oh, they just gave it to me, it came pre-printed with photo-id and everything.
I had to fetch a new one a few weeks ago when the RFID chip broke, they just swiped it in and a machine under the desk started humming, a minute later a new replacement card popped out.
'twas quite impressive

It's only impressive when you're not the person who's printing them all, one by one because they took away the batch processing... they probably have something in the printer that we don't have that sets the tag in the card (I've been told it's RFID, but I know that most of the management at work don't really know their arses from their elbows (or their mouths given the amount of crap they speak) I'm not sure whether to believe them!) to their account, so yours are done by the printer, ours are done manually by the users.
