Zone 1 Challenge Cup 2008 May 30:th 2008
The date is set. The bets are on. The trains are hot. It's time for...
Zone 1 Challenge Cup 2008
After extensive research and double polls the date is finally set. On May 30:th the Fifth Annual Zone 1 Challenge will take place.
Since we (HÃ¥kan and Patrick) won the event in -05 (and tied 2nd last year) we feel it's our turn to carry the torch forward. What has been decided so far is:
The challenge - Zone 1 in shortest possible time
The date - May 30:th
The time - 12 o'clock
Updated! The place - has been set to central London location. PM me (hwolge) for this information.
Updated! The rules for this year's competition has been posted on this forum. Please note the start station nomination rule!
The prestigious competition - for best team name
The participants - solos and teams, novices and experts, young and old - everyone is welcome
The post challenge venue - Horse & Groom in Great Portland Street
New!Neil Blake, aka tubeguru, will perform the all important draw from the hat! Please note the start station nomination rule!
The cost - free
Plus - at least one surprise activity at the venue
At the venue (same one as in 2005) we have the functions room exclusively booked between 4pm and 8pm (after that, the public may join us). There we'll meet after the challenge to disclose the winners, celebrate, tell untold tales, have some drinks, but most of all have a good time...
* Stay tuned for more details at this forum!
Hope to see you all,
HÃ¥kan, Patrick, Maria & Lars

You haven't mentioned our meeting time and place. Usual time and usual place seem like a good idea to me; for the uninitiated or forgetful, that's 1200 at Argyll Street, just outside Oxford Circus tube station.
I'm happy to get involved with organising in some capacity - what exactly did you have in mind?
OH! I could bring enough pens for everybody...

Well, I also edit my mistakes from time to time, and it makes the thread more confusing and more interesting...Root wrote:Last edited by Root on 2008-03-10 23:37, edited 1 time in total.
As for organising, we are merely thinking that if last year's venue does not come through, we'll be hard pressed for some local help to find another place. As for pens etc - yes, that type of help might come in handy as well. We'll certainly get into more detail when time approaches!
But for now, just keep your calendar free of anything else that day!

It looks like I'll be able to swap my rest day for the Friday of that week meaning I will be available to join you at some stage of the day.
Is there a vacancy for an independent timekeeper, similar to what I did last year perchance?

I'm sure we will appreciate you in some formal functions, like the traditional draw from the hat, and the timely send off. I hope you will attend the challenge as well, though! We'll get back to you when when we get closer to the event...tubeguru wrote:Is there a vacancy for an independent timekeeper, similar to what I did last year perchance?

I may well be able to make it this year... see if I can perhaps improve on my impressive debut time!
As far as an after-challenge venue is concerned, may I suggest the Duke of Argyll; just off Piccadilly Circus on Great Windmill Street. A very nice little pub and dirt cheap pints too - I had a few in there at the weekend for £1.60 a time... not bad for Central London!

uefacup81,
Sounds like a good venue. We're still hoping for the same venue as the past two years, Angel in the Fields, GU and Soup Dragon will hopefully try to book it tonight. We expect the usual amount of people i.e. between 20 and 30 in all.
If that one falls through, I might get back to you on your tip!

Yes, I can certainly assist in all that mularky. I'm not sure I feel fit enough to actually take part.hwolge wrote:I'm sure we will appreciate you in some formal functions, like the traditional draw from the hat, and the timely send off. I'll let GU give the details, but a venue for the after-events was booked up and sorted today. It is a slightly different location from the past couple of years, but the group of us there were all pretty happy with it....

Re: Zone 1 Challenge May 30:th 2008
As mentioned by Matt we do indeed have a venue, which was a lot easier to book than last year.....
I didn't realise but it seems we are returning to the 2005 post challenge meeting place being The Horse and Groom in Great Portland Street..
Please see link below from Geoff's site.........
http://www.geofftech.co.uk/tubechalleng ... 2005.shtml
We have the upstairs room booked from 4-8pm and they are going to open the kitchen a little earlier for us as well, normally food is served from 6pm.....
We can continue to use the function room after 8pm and the bar downstairs is good as well with a quiz machine(which 6 of us were playing on for over an hour last night) and a darts board so maybe we can have a tube challengers tournament in the evening
The following link includes a map and other details,
this is easily accessible from 5 tube stations, although they are all a short walk.... So plenty of options on getting to the venue depending on where your route ends.....

Look forward to seeing everyone on the day
