The best place to probably start is HT4 as then you avoid a waiting time anywhere as it goes straight through H123, but that extra time is lost going up to Amersham at the end which takes about an extra 10 minutes, combined with the fact your left with only a service every 30 minutes
I thought the late evening Amersham/Chesham service was better than the early morning one.

Looking at it at where I'd be finishing and at what times heres the timings

Leave Amersham: 05.28
Do Chesham, Watford branches
Arrive North Harrow: 06.50 1/2

A time of: 1hr 22 1/2 mins

And if I started at Heathrow I'd get the 0503 as that seems to be the fastest of the bunch and so to finish within the 17hr 30 record time you'd need to be finishing with these sets of times:

Leave North Harrow: 20.56
Do Watford and Chesham branches
Arrive Amersham: 22.25

A time of: 1hr 29 mins

So its only a difference of 6.5 minutes but I'm still not convinced about its merits, you have to wait every 30 minutes to have the right set of connections to finish and also when I start from Heathrow its a long time before Kensington Olympia is open so I have to rearrange that as well so it doesn't seem to be that good in saving time perhaps 2 or 3 minutes at Heathrow with the wait at HT4 and the extra minute here of there or journey time.

With the NW finish, is it essential to finish at Amersham? Can't you do Watford and Amersham first, and then finish at Chesham?

Also if you leave North Harrow ten minutes later, you get the option of doing a Croxley to Rickmansworth run, which is one-and-a-half miles, and you'd have thirteen minutes to do it!

Yes, I take that point but you do leave yourself at the mercy of the Chesham train seeing as it gets into Chesham at 2233 1/2 and seeing as you'd be leaving Heathrow Terminal 4 at 0503 you'd be cutting it very fine. Also 1.6 miles in 13.5 minutes could be a bit tight as well but the other connections are pretty safe.
