We used to play ELP and Floyd etc in the 6th form block at school..... :D

At least you have musical taste as the awful 80's (surely the worst decade for music) would have been the time you were growing up and getting into various sounds.....

Assuming my music tastes were defined between the ages of 8 and 18, I would have been exposed to the music of the years 1981 to 1991.

Fortunately, I realised that music from before 1979 was much better than that which followed ...

Yes exactly as I suspected.....so was there any decent music between 1981-91??

Depeche Mode spring to mind.......one of Geoff's fav's I believe...

Well... according to my sources ELP did have just the one hit "Fanfare for the common man" reached no. 2 in June '77. The only listing for "Lucky Man" is the one by Verve.

Although the 80's did bring a lot of crap there was some good stuff as well. However on balance I think the 70's wins hand's down, The Bay City Rollers, The Wombles, The Osmonds, Mud, Sweet, Slade, Gary Glitter... the list is endless (+ my personal favourites Chicory Tip)

Exactly, I think the problem comparing era's is to consider the non-commercial music as well as the chart stuff......

The non-commercial music of the 70's had plenty of excellent Prog-rock. aside the aforementioned ELP and Floyd we had the likes of Rush, Genesis (pre-sold out era), Yes, Camel and severval more that Neil know doubt remembers.......

There was also a vibrant rock scene with groups such as; Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Free, Nazareth, Lynyrd Skynyrd and so on....

Then of course in 1976 the punk or new wave scene really kicked in....
This was an exiting time with plenty of small and large gigs going on and a lot of high energy music......
The better known groups being; Sex Pistols, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Clash, Jam, Ian Dury.....and dozens of lesser known groups.....

A group of friends formed "The Hounslow Mob" and followed a band named "Penetration" for a number of years...But that's another story folks :D

LOL, no they had a single released in 1977 or 78 entitled "Don't Dictate"
and an album that did fairly well "Moving Targets" in which The Hounslow Mob got a dedication. I will find the link to the website so you can have a look...they re-formed a couple of years ago but I don't think you can ever turn the clock back.........and there is also a very non-active forum I belong to...
