Ultimate Formula One Championship

Post by michael_churchill »

This championship table has been compiled by awarding points to the top ten finishers in each season’s world championship, based on the current points system for Formula One Grand Prix. That is 25 points to each year’s world champion, 18 points to the runner-up, 15 points for third, 12 points for fourth, 10 points for fifth, 8 points for sixth, 6 points for seventh, 4 points for eighth, 2 points for ninth and 1 point for tenth. Drivers who tied for a position in a season’s ranking will share the points allocated to all the shared positions – for instance, two drivers tied for sixth and seventh will each get 7 points, half of the 14 point total for sixth and seventh. To break ties, I look for most first place finishes, then most second place finishes, and so on.

The new top 20:

Interesting. Not sure about splitting the points of people who finished level though as that could mean someone who finished lower in the Championship than they did would score more points! (e.g. if the Championship was tied, the two drivers would get 12.5 points, but the person who came third would score 15!).

It would also be interesting to see what would happen if the scores were averaged by the number of seasons in which they competed.

The splitting of points for drawed positions take the sum of all the points for all the positions tied not just the points for that position- this means that if the championship was tied both winners would get 21.5 points ((18+25)/2) and third place would get 15 points - I presume

On another note, if all the individual yearly championships were run to a 2025 points system then some yearly championship standings would likely be slightly different - I wonder if this change would effect the positions scored in the ultimate formula one championship.

It may well change some of the positions in the final tab;e of most seasons up to 1990, because in all of those seasons only a certain number of results counted towards your final total. For example, the very first championship only counted the best four results from seven rounds!

As late as 1980 the system was the frankly ridiculous "best five results from rounds one to seven, and the best five results from rounds eight to 14".
