Nice-looking station! Where is it?

Can you identify a station from just a paving slab? Sadly, some people can

Station Dulcimer - answered

Post by RobbieM »

…and well done to michael_churchill, lunaticonthegrass and trains500 for correctly identifying Station Dulcimer as Leven. I visited in August (well, I had to get my 100% of stations travelled from/to/through back as soon as I could reasonably do so…).

Stand by for Station Egg-Shaker coming soon… :)

Station Egg-Shaker

Post by RobbieM »

Okay folks, it’s Station Egg-Shaker. The egg-shaker is a very simple percussion instrument, and basically does what it says on the shell. You shake it backwards and forwards like the maracas for a gentle rhythmic effect. I find it very useful when my hi-hat will be too loud for the quieter songs our band plays.

But enough of that. Just PM me the easy answer to the station! :D

Station Egg-Shaker - Answered...

Post by RobbieM »

...and well done to trains500 and lunaticonthegrass for correctly identifying Station Egg-Shaker as the brand new Ashley Down. Wonderfully, it is an anagram of "Delay Shown", as identified by Geoff M. I took a day trip to Bristol 12 days after it opened, just to tick the station off.

That's it for 2024! I'm up to Scotland shortly, and will be off-forum for a few weeks. I'll endeavour to launch Station Flugelhorn in the middle of January.

Happy Christmas and Merry New Year! :D :D :D

Station Flugelhorn

Post by RobbieM »

Welcome back to Nice Looking Stations for 2025! Let’s start with Station Flugelhorn. The flugelhorn is similar to the trumpet or cornet, but with a more mellow sound than both of these. Quite beautiful, in my opinion.

But where is station flugelhorn? PM your answers to me! :D

Station Flugelhorn - Answered

Post by RobbieM »

A jolly excellent 'Well done!' to lunaticonthegrass and trains500, for correctly identifying Station Flugelhorn as the brand new Ashington. I took the photo during my visit there on January 8th - getting my station count back to 100%! Yet again....

Station Güiro will be coming in the next day or few. I know you can't bear the wait....

Station Güiro

Post by RobbieM »

Well, this Nice-looking station! Where is it? thread has now been running for over four years! (And nearly sixty stations, I think.) Anyway, on with the motley, as they say....

Now, this is a pretty little number – Station Güiro. The Güiro is a Latin percussion instrument, where you rub a stick along a notched hollow gourd, giving a kind of ratchet sound. Thought you’d like to know that.

As for Station Güiro, where is this gorgeous location? PM your answers! :D

Station Güiro - Answered

Post by RobbieM »

Well done to trains500, RJSRdg and Luncaticonthegrass for correctly identifying that gorgeous Güiro as being Ribblehead. You can even spot the viaduct if you look to the right of the station building.

I took the photo on Thursday 9th January this year. That was the day after I took the previous photo of Ashington. Two great days out from Carlisle, but they were both so cooooooollllddddd...!

Hold on tight! There's a Hurdy-Gurdy coming in a day or two...

Station Hurdy-Gurdy

Post by RobbieM »

So, after the beauty of Station Güiro, I don’t think Station Hurdy-Gurdy is really much to look at. You may disagree, though.

As for the hurdy-gurdy itself, it’s a clever medieval instrument with a fascinating history, where you continuously ‘bow’ strings by turning a crank. Several strings may be played at once – drones and melody. I like the music it creates, though I’ve never actually played one.

Anyway, back on topic – PM your answers as usual. :D
