Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
Looks as though no one is going to get this, so I'll give you the full quote:
"Back home again, that Yorkshire bus-conductress who was sacked last week for calling Pakistani passengers 'stinking ****' has got her job back."
They were, amazingly, the first words ever heard on BBC2. On 20 April 1964 a power-cut, caused by a fire at Battersea Power Station, wiped out the first evening's scheduled programmes from Television Centre, and the only place that BBC-tv could transmit from was the newsroom at Alexandra Palace, which was unaffected. The newsreader Gerald Priestland was thus sent to read an emergency news bulletin, but the sound failed for the first couple of minutes and only broke in on the above-mentioned story. The launch was subsequently abandoned and the opening schedule was postponed to the following evening.
Footage of the disastrous opening night, believed to be lost for many years, can be found here.

Neville Chamberlain didn't win either.
Holder of the slowest recorded 274 attempt: 4 months, 1 day, 9 hours, 17 minutes, 32 seconds.

Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
You're not far off. A different Neville Chamberlain was an army officer in India who named a new cue game 'snooker' after a nickname given to first-year cadets at Woolwich's Military Academy.

What is New Zealand's one and only spelling which differs from the British (and indeed from the Australian)?

Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
Correct! (Britain uses the Norwegian spelling "fjord", of course.)

Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
I think it's fair to say we're all stumped by this one. Any chance of an answer before Christmas?

Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
I'm intrigued by the use of the term circuit. I could understand something like grandstand, but circuit is surprising.

Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
It's likely that at least one building on a street circuit somewhere is used as a polling station at other times of the year. So it could be Monte Carlo, Singapore, Baku... And if we include former circuits, Detroit, Phoenix, Barcelona...

Re: Dastardly difficult trivia quiz
I'm going to hazard a guess that it might be a former UK GP circuit (or part of an old one that is now built over), such as Goodwood or Aintree. After all, the words "Formula One" weren't mentioned, so it could be any circuit used for a motor race that was commonly referred to as a "Grand Prix".michael_churchill wrote: ↑23 Dec 2019, 09:25 It's likely that at least one building on a street circuit somewhere is used as a polling station at other times of the year. Correct!
One of the garage buildings now forming part of Brooklands Museum was used as a polling station in the 1990s/early 2000s.
