Random 15 Championship 2019/20: Round 2

Post by tangy »

Welcome to the 2019/20 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone or network e.g. DLR onto the challenge. So are you ready to take on the Random 15 championship?

The rules and scoring are unchanged from previous seasons but if anyone is not familiar with them, or needs a refresh, they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm

Round 2 is just under two weeks away, so here are the details:

When: Saturday 16th November 2019 12:30 UK local time.
Pre-challenge meet up point: Oval (ticket hall/street side of ticket barriers)
Post-challenge meet up point: Our regular haunt. The Bricklayers Arms, Gresses Street (off TCR). I have had no alternative venues suggested to me that would fit the bill.
Variant: Normal round. Only 15 LU stations within zones 1 and 2 only.
Time limit: 4 hours

Closures affecting the challenge:
Circle: Closed throughout.
District: No service South Kensington- East Ham.
DLR: No service Stratford International- Canning Town
Hammersmith & City: No service Baker Street- Barking.
Metropolitan: No service Baker Street- Aldgate
Overground (North London Line): No service Camden Road- Stratford.
Overground (East London Line): No service Highbury & Islington- Dalston Junction AND Surrey Quays- New X

Other closures to be aware of:
Whitechapel: Station closed. ELL trains non stopping.

There is no National Rail engineering work planned that will adversely affect the challenge but please check if travelling from further afield.

Everyone is welcome but please advise if you are attending.

Thanks
The BERC

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

According to the TfL website, there is no District service between Earl's Court and East Ham (although of course Glos Rd and South Ken will be open on the Picc). There will be an increased District service between Earl's Court and Edgware Road.

I'm slightly surprised that the HCL is terminating at Baker Street as I didn't think there were facilities to terminate H&C trains there.

This has been done numerous times in the past. Trains arrive in the outer rail platform as normal, detrain, shunt forward, change ends then cross to arrive back into the inner rail platform to pick up passengers.

This District Line business is confusing - TFL shows as follows

"District Line: Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November, no service Earl's Court - East Ham. A reduced service will operate between Barking - East Ham and Earl's Court - Ealing Broadway. Additonal trains will operate Earl's Court - Edgware Road. Replacement buses will operate."

The map does not show the district as not operating either - so is it no service Earl's Court - East Ham OR a reduced service??

I've noticed that the maps are often not the same as the descriptions for weekend engineering work.

I've tested a few journeys and it's
  • no service Earl's Court to East Ham
  • services every five minutes between Earl's Court and Turnham Green (alternating Ealing Broadway and Richmond)
  • services every five minutes between Earl's Court and Edgware Road (effectively just replacing the Circle with District)
Assuming that Journey Planner has the correct data.
Not a plus one
