Random 15 Championship 2017/18: Round 5

Post by tangy »

Hello and welcome to the 2017/18 Random 15 Championship. I am your host (commonly known to regulars as the BERC when I am hosting Random 15 challenges). The Random 15 Challenge is just that, visit 15 randomly selected stations that feature on the Tube Map and/or London Connections Map (usually within zones 1-2 and using the Underground network only). There will be certain rounds within the championship that are a variation of this such as adding an extra zone/s or network/s e.g. DLR, National Rail onto the challenge and these are known as "twist" rounds.

The rules of the Random 15 Challenge are unchanged from last season but if anyone is not familiar with these (or how the scoring works), they can be read here: http://www.explorerticket.co.uk/tubecha ... 5rules.htm

The 2017/18 season's penultimate round, so here is the vital details for you:

When: Saturday 21st April 2018 12:30 UK local time.
Pre-Challenge meet up point: TO BE ADVISED (to be generated randomly)
Post challenge meet up point: The Bricklayers Arms pub, Gresse Street (off TCR, the road).
Variant: Twist round. The twist being that 20 stations will be generated (LU stations in zones 1 and 2) but challengers only need to visit 15 of them. Which 5 you decide not to visit to up to you.
Time limit for completing: Twist round, 6 hour time limit.

Closures affecting the challenge:
--Currently there is NO scheduled engineering work planned on any TfL rail mode of transport.

Other engineering work that may affect you:
--Greater Anglia (West): No trains via Tottenham Hale, all via Seven Sisters. Temple Mills line closed.

All welcome, Please advise me if you are attending. Thank you.

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Sorry to be a pedant, but I'm sure that if I don't ask, somebody will...

Does the meet-up point have to be one of our chosen 15, or can it be one of the 5 you don't visit?

Trying to think of a pertinent example... Say Regent's Park is the meet-up point and Great Portland Street is also on the list. You might want to run off to start at GPS and never visit Regent's Park by train.

I know it's a twist round, but it's not a twist that makes it more time consuming. Do we need more than the normal 4 hour time limit?

The meet up station at the start can indeed be one of the 5 you decide not to visit on the challenge. As long as each challenger visits ANY 15 stations out of the 20 on the list then their time will be valid.

I'm away, so won't be coming. I can do some kind of random 15 for The Hague Trams maybe.

Isn't not having any engineering work anywhere enough of a twist already? ;-)

I suppose in theory it's possible to visit 16 - if you reach the 15th on foot, by bus etc and the 16th station is adjacent to it.

Are you aware, maybe you are, that the London Marathon Expo is at the ExCeL centre then?
Perhaps all the runners will be at the Parkrun on their way to the exhibition.

According to https://www.virginmoneylondonmarathon.c ... thon-expo/ from Wed 18 to Sat 21. I believe that if you're in the Marathon you can go there to pick up your stuff like number bibs. It strikes me that all those runner-types in the area might boost attendance for the parkrun. Possibly even influenced the start date?!?

A niece of mine has got into the marathon ("fast for an old lady", as I call it). Her mum, my sister, and family are coming from Devon. I must find out their arrangements - I might come for the Random 15, stay overnight, and cheer on my niece on Sunday.
