I disagree with you Sam, I have done all my Tube Challenges (including full networks) with my trusty Oyster card I believe it is ideal for Tube Challenges..well it is a Z1-9 Freedom Pass! In addition you can get a printout of the journey log as a bit more evidence to GWR.

This facility did come in very useful during a Z1 starting at Notting Hill Gate, in which I made a bit of a cock up on, not realising I didn't visit Earl's Court during my route, but did sign out there, thus got a printout of my journey log as evidence foir the challenge time!

This is a Central line train to "Woodford via Hainault"- sadly, not no more!

Stupid blasted time-out. What if I want to enjoy my journey on the Underground and take my time, or catch up on some lost sleep on the Circle line?

On the other hand, I went from Uxbridge to Hatch End via the Northwick Park to Kenton run, and it only charged me one fare. Nice. :)

One more silly question, the Oyster will cost me £3.00 but what is the minimum amount of credit I can then put on it :?:

Before it's too late and I look like a thief or a fraudster, I did indeed get my free rail card from a student bank account. While I'm far from certain, I believe RBS offer it as well as NatWest.

Now, back on with the discussion...

No minimum fares on Oyster, however, I do get a little annoyed when someone asks for 10pence and then pays with a debit/credit card... rah!

So Kevin, have a heart and think of the staff when topping up ;)

At some of the busier central London tube stations they have introduced a minimum £5 topup when using the ticket office. You can still add 10p or whatever if you use the machine.

Do they have £3 credit on them?

The receipts say Oyster Card Deposit £3.00 and then I stuck £2.00 on each which says "Pre Pay" So that replaces the one that Dr Who lost and I have now joined the "Oyster set"

10p

Actually it is quite nice that they offer that. Mobile phones on pay-as-one-goes only offer a multiple-of-five-pound top up on their phone-up-and-pay-with-credit-card service. But why? Why can't you buy £4.82 of credit if you like? It's all computerised!

No, when buying oysters from the self service machines (for £3), they're creditless.
Except for the one I bought from the machine at Gloucester Road last month - it came pre-credited with 1p.

True story.
I don't think any of us expected you to have made that up!

Good news - Pay as you go will be valid between Victoria and Balham (Southern) from 8 November 2009.

(According to a mailshot from Sadiq Khan http://eepurl.com/eOhE, and confirming on the fare finder.
