SimSig

Post by tubeguru »

I posted something on this a while ago in the thread about BVE but it didn't get much of a response so I'll try again.

Does anyone here play the signalling simulation SimSig? (http://www.simsig.co.uk).

I find it more interesting than BVE on occasion, especially with the 1985 timetables that have been written for most of the signalling areas, meaning you have to deal with locos running round trains etc, especially on the Exeter sim.

The ultimate challenge is running either Kings Cross or Waterloo on the most difficult setting with the ARS turned off. You can even do multiplay over the internet too, which I think is a great idea.

Here's a screenshot from one of the panels on the North London Line sim (the whole thing is spread over four screens). It's not full size - I had to squish it down a bit to fit in here so the text looks a little distorted.

I play it, i too prefer it to BVE.
Out of interest, why have you signalled 6E34 down the Barking branch?

I've not played either of these, but they sound mediumly interesting. Does it mean that I get to see why delays are so easily caused by faulty signalmen?

Jonny, I didn't route 6E34 down the Barking branch!

That's a screenshot from the website. I'll just check where 6E34 is supposed to go ...

It's the 1313 Calvert to King's Cross FLT. Obviously someone just routed it up there for the purposes of the screenshot.

Do you play Exeter at all? I like the 1981 timetable.

Stafford can be troublesome too - lots of slow and fast lines converging at consecutive junctions. Play the 1985 timetable and you have run-rounds thrown in too.

Great fun.

I don't like Cambridge.

I'm currently giving Bristol a go. This is only a beta version, so lots of bugs in it (trains terminating in the middle of the line, "wrong platforms" at Temple Meads which are actually correct, trains being sent to "wrong signalboxes" etc.)

But it's a fun layout to try to maintain, especially with 15 platforms at Temple Meads station.

There was talk of a West Hampstead sim ... that would be good too.

Well from what I read on the forum, it didn't appear as though anyone had vetoed the idea.

Unless you've seen something specific that says otherwise.

The problem with doing more IECCs for SimSig is that Geoff Mayo, the original creator of same, entered into an agreement with Railtrack (as was) to provide a professional version (called TRESIM) for training purposes to EVERY IECC in the country, as well as a number of "traditional" panel boxes.

In view of this commercial agreement, Geoff can't work on any more IECC sims due to a conflict of interest.

Cheers,

Barry

Can anyone else do it though? Isn't there more than one person on there who can program the sims?

Probably, though they're a bit busy at the moment, what with Bristol, Exeter and Cambridge all on the go.

And an updated version of Kings Cross (v2.111) was released on Saturday, and is available from the main downloads page.

Main changes:
  • Orientation of the layout has been swapped, such that King's Cross is on VW5 and Hitchin on VW1, to match the real life signalbox
  • Slots have been added to the North London Line connections
  • Missing shunt signals added
  • A new 1985 timetable has been produced, which will keep you on your toes! This has been written by Kurt Sickelmore
Cheers,

Barry
