George Osborne - formerly Chancellor of the Exchequer and MP for Tatton in Cheshire, and now editor of the London Evening Standard - is campaigning for a new high-speed rail link across the North of England:

I couldn't believe this claim at first: "The distance between Manchester and Leeds is shorter than the length of the Central line on the London Underground." But I checked and he's right - 43 miles against 46.

Don't know how he came up with this particular piece of trivia, but that's the first time I've been impressed by anything George Osborne has said!
