I understand your point about birthdays. It is absolutely another number change, although there are more legal implications involved. I am probably somewhat of a hypocrite, as I do pay more attention to my birthday than new year. I like birthdays for entirely selfish reasons. I get presents, and I get to chose some nice things to do. I'm king for the day. Having said that, recent birthdays have been celebrated less than traditionally as a child. I like being able to do what I like and I will take advantage of that, but I am not seeking a huge celebration, or any fuss. Thats where new years differs, everyone comments on it, and everyone makes such a fuss over it, which puts me off. The purpose of new years is solely to big up the number change, while birthdays are about treating a person to a nice day, even if the timing is arbitrary. Arbitrary timings do make sense though.
