I suspect Geoff is thinking of Barking which I think is the only other station where non-terminating trains open the doors on both sides.

There are several short terminuses where this happens as well, eg Arnos Grove, White City, Loughton, Golders Green.

In theory, it could happen at Uxbridge too, but it doesn't at the moment; not sure if it ever has either...

Ah yes. Should have been more specific ... Non terminating stations!

The answer is indeed Barking where eastbound districts open up onto platform 2 and platform 1a (non-signed) so you can crossover to the Overground service.

Have the doors ever opened both sides for people at Uxbridge? Last time i checked there was a sign up strictly instructing drivers to always open the doors on the right (pl. 2) and never on the left (pl. 3)

Other way round with the platforms - but true.

Another silly question.

What london underground station name has the most consonants in a row?

Another debate re Geoff's list. Although the SWT station obviously has a building at Vauxhall, does the LU station?

thoughf of another one this evening too ... the opposite of 'stations closest together/shortest time' - what would be (say) the top 10 list of two stations that take the longest to travel between? the Metropolitan line is obviously going to be in there a lot (Chesham to Chalfont being the winner), but .. aside from that?

Seven Sisters to Finsbury park it quite a long stretch, but there are other less obvious ones like Dagenham East to Elm Park, that take over 3 minutes...

(and yes, I think Vauxhall tube station has no surface building!)

If TCR to Oxford Circus is 52 seconds, then I'm impressed that TCR to Bond Street is 56!

I quite like seeing all that sort of geeky stuff listed on the same page - it always elicits a "I didn't realise that particular station had that characteristic" type response.

@al, Corrected! Yeah, been meaning to do this for ages - had quite a lot of it written down, just never got round to making a web page out of it - have done so now, more to come ...

Why don't they open the doors on both sides at those stations, like Uxbridge? Health and safety?

Off the top of my head, it's because of a faulty mirror on platform 2, I think. Either that or a TUC thingy.

East Ham to Barking is about 5 mins, according to journey planner, but I haven't tested it.

Wembley Park to Finchley Road, Met Line?
Finchley Road to Baker Street, Met Line?

Because its easier to make a clear decision which side to open and then passengers can be directed to correct side of train. Otherwise one side has to be closed first and late passengers turn up on the wrong side.

There was a problem with the OPO mirror on platform 2/3 at Uxbridge - it meant that S Stock needed an assisted dispatch but I think they have fixed it.

In the 7 years I've been doing tubechallenging, Cockfosters and Uxbridge have both changed which platform they use to board a train in the central platforms.
